Lack of cranking power

This is perhaps going to sound like a stupid
question, but nevertheless I am stumped. On my
1950 6V 8N (side-mount distributor), I don't seem
to have any cranking power. I have a brand new
Interstate 6V battery (purchased on 8/8/12). After
having this problem, I took the battery back to
the place of purchase and had it tested. It tested
just fine and it was fully charged. I cleaned the
posts and cables and still have the problem. I do
not seem to be able to find any loose connections.
After putting the battery back in, it rolled the
tractor over for maybe 10 seconds (very slowly and
not enough 'umph' to start it) and then did not
have enough power to turn it at all. I am looking
for suggestions.

jmead9........GROUNDS are the BIGGEST problems with 6-volt systems. Sounds like you need to re-ground the back end of yer starter motor. Just remove the 8" screws and slip the starter motor out about 1/2" and WIRE-WHEEL the H3LL outta the gap. Now re-install yer 8" screws and try that with yer better grounded starter motor.........the grounded Dell

ditto.. check the palce the battery cable grounds too. also pull the starter back about 1" and polish the surface so that it gets good connection.

What size (AWG) are the battery cables?

Do you have an OEM starter (rebuilt or otherwise) or an inexpensive aftermarket one?

There are 4 likely causes of your problem:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

You have addressed the first two likely causes.

Another cause to consider after you eliminate the four most likely is a bad starter as Dean suggested.
