I have a '92 Toyota truck with a 4 cylinder that's my kick around farm truck. It doesn't get driven much. It has the in-tank fuel pump. I started having problems with it taking longer to crank sometimes and not having power. Sometimes it won't even idle. When it's acting up a spray of ether will make it run which makes me think its a fuel issue. I changed the fuel filter, but no improvement. An after market pump is $135 plus $15 for the strainer/sock. Has anyone had luck in the circumstance just changing or cleaning the pump strainer/sock. I'm hoping to drop the tank this weekend, but hate spending all that money on something I don't drive every day.

They are about as difficult as they come to diagnosis...Most all of'em I see are worn slap arse out,,, They were not that good of a truck to start off with.... Guessing will not get'er done... its not unusual to have multiple issues... If its not worth a pump and what ever issue arises after have it ground up into sausage....

It might also be a bad pressure
regulator.

Can you remove the fuel line to the carb and see if the pump is moving a decent flow of gas? Either by cranking or does it work just by turning on the ignition? If you are getting gas then it might be moisture in the fuel? I have a terrible problem every year with equipment/trucks which have been running ok when the weather is dry and then when it turns cold and damp they dont want to run properly or at all.

It's electronic fuel injection. I think there's fuel being pumped but not enough. I let it get really low on gas and added some fresh fuel along with seafoam, etc. but it didn't make a change.

A weak pump will cause that but you have to check pressure at the pump side of the filter to be sure it is a pump problem. I do not remember the numbers but if my memory is right you need 50 plus PSI or the fuel injection system will starve for fuel

I'm thinking that's what it is, but I don't have anything to measure the pressure. I had a similar problem on the truck about 10 years ago. It would starve for fuel on the highway. the strainer sock had a bunch of cellulose carbon looking stuff in it. I changed the pump and sock back then.

Ya and the only way to know for sure is to either test the pressure or replace the pump etc. Either way you go it is not super easy to do and if the tank is close to full it is 10 times harder to do

Most in the tank pumps I've done were in mostly full tanks. Murphy's law.

Yep me also so you either figure out how to drain them or you drop them then pump out the gas so to make it easy to put them back in. Back in the day I could drop a transmission with out a transmission jack but now days that is not going to happen. I still remember dropping a VW engine with no jack. Crawled under it and let it sit on my chest and then slide out from under it

You might want to just take the bed off the truck, if the bolts will come out ,it is a lot faster than taking the tank down. I used the cherry picker and the tie downs in the corner of the bed to take mine off.(1989)
