It's a doohicky to securely lock the rotor shaft while you install new points. It locks the drive tang on the rotor shaft at exactly the 1/4" offset shown in the FO-4 front distributor timing diagram. Once installed you can flip the distributor over and install and position the new points using a test lamp to get the ignition timing dead on. You can even use the lock bar to clamp the distributor nice and secure in a vise while you fiddle with the points. That is John's version of the locking bar not mine. I have removed Johns picture and replaced it with two of mine showing my version of the tool which consists of the locking bar, spacer, bolt, abnd knurled nut.
