just got our 2nd store.

1st one came ina few months ago... putting a REAL hurting on NAPA and car quest locally. Our local napa store went from corporate to franchise, and has been sold 3x in the last 2ys. I think this latest owner ALSO owns the local carquest...

advance and autozone did that here, it hurt the napa but it survived, people soon learned "cheap price" = cheap parts, autozero offers lifetime replacement on there starters BUT how many times do you want to crawl under that grain truck to replace that "free replacement" starter? :(

Fergus Falls MN is the cloest twon with more than one auto parts store. O'Riley's moved in about 2 years ago. Didn't really hurt NAPA but Car Quest and Advanced Auto is gone. No big loss in my mind.

i bought a starter for my dodge ram one time from napa.. walked in asked price.

they asked which unit I wanted / ie.. warranty.

3m was something like 69$

1yr was 99$

lifetime was 129$

they had the starter setting on the counter in the box. .. they only had 1 in stock and I didn't feel like ordering one and coming back another day.. i asked which they had.

same starter .. :) they just rang it up differently based on what you bought.

IE.. smae piece of metal for 69$ could cost 129$

it's not like they had 3, and the expensive one 'looked better' or was built better to last longer. just a warranty / liability 'payment' issue.

I took the 3m one.. ran the truck another few years.. sold it to work.. it's still running.

what a ripoff.. :)

Now that's kinda funny. I got a starter for the wife's Chevy 2 months ago at NAPA. Dealer laid 2 starters, cheapest and best side by side on the counter and ask which one I wanted. He had no problem with me looking at both starter before I selected the best one. Sounds to me like you got a crook running the one you use.

I've been using the same dealer for years and am very happy with them.

like i said.. been sold 3x

sme starter.. 3 prices based on warranty.

but you know.. autozone does that on alts too.. I picked up a cheap delco 10si for a case tractor.. and it's the same alternator .. price depends on warranty... so it's not an uncommon practice I guess. and that was only a couple months ago on the alternator..

Advance and Autozone also hurt the local NAPA stores, one more than the other. My closest NAPA store has morphed into a next day ordering site. They now stock only the most fastest moving parts and order just about everything else.

We have no Orielys stores in my area but I would like to see one.

O'Reilly's moved in here about 10 or 12 years ago. I've been there maybe twice. If you're looking for floor mats or air fresheners, O'Reilly's is the place to go. If you actually need parts to fix your truck or car, better go to NAPA.

orilies strikes me as a cross between our autozones and a napa.. napa being all parts and fluids.. autozone being mostly accessories with some parts on the wall / counter.. and oriley being in between.

I've only been in O'Rileys a couple of times when I've been in Fergus (25 miles) but I think you hit that nail on the head soundguy. The folks woring at the one in Fergus seem to know what they are doing which is much different than say Autozone.

Up till about a year ago we had a choice of O'Reilly's or drive 50 miles round trip to go to another parts store. Most things like alternators and starters have life time warranty on them that I buy at O'Reilly's and most cost the same price or just a fer more $$ for that warranty and it is well worth it. As for the local store I have a dealer account with them and have for close to 30 years and having that saves me around 10% on most things. But what really makes or breaks a place it the people they have behind the counter. So if the people there have no clue then that makes a bad store no questions ask. The O'Reilly's we have has good people they have to be since they have to deal with me LOL

Did that twice under a Ford Ranger until I took it to the dealer, last time I had to mess with it!

Once I get beyond MD, Oreilly's is always there for me on the way to Florida.

I purchased a re-man engine for my E-150 in Pensacola, Fl and changed out the engine in my service van while there. Great Folks, at least i think so.

Later I had to change out the engine again while still under warranty.

The engine re-man center has a warehouse, here close. ATK engines, Calif. paid me $$$$ to make the warranty change out.

Like always, O'Reilly will UPS me a part, if I cannot get the results from the local NAPA store.

While, here in PA, I always purchase from the local NAPA store. Why? FREE COFFEE. Plus, local "small town mom and pop owners, NOT big CORPORATE from St. Louis.

Reminds me, I had better order something from O'REILLY's via web site, soon. I gots to keep-up my "commercial account". Road trip SOUTH coming up soon.
