Change over to alternator

A 6 volt , 30 amp Positive or negative ground alternator complete with internal regulator and pulley is available from most suppliers of Model A Ford parts. A perfect fit for 9N,2N, 8N models. No need to change coil, light bulbs etc.

jimcartrac........ah yes, the sphincterly challenged originality authorities. You forgot the BIG advantage of converting to 12-volts. FASTER engine cranking for weak and worn engines with low compression. (Ford specs: 90psi min) .........Dell, a 12V-advocate for the right reasons

But that cost a person about $100 and you can buy a Delco 10si all day long for under $50 is you have a core and again you have the advantage of 12 volts and only needing to keep one type of battery and charger on hand.

Yep Old got it and Dell missed it. Now any of my kids or my wife can jump my N if needed or use the N to jump something on the farm.

I agree with the others; if you are going to switch to an alternator go 12V.

But as long as your 6V battery has enough juice to give you spark, you can use your boosting vehicle's 12 V across the starter without damaging the 6V system. (See one of Bruce's 50 tips.) I've done this a bunch of times--gives nice fast cranking, too. Just make sure your wife/kids know where to put the 12V--it's *not* across the 6V battery!

I've done this a bunch of times--gives nice fast cranking, too. Just make sure your wife/kids know where to put the 12V--it's *not* across the 6V battery!

I think you are asking a lot of most women and most kids nowadays.
12V is much safer. Not only because you don't have to know any special way to jump straight to the starter but you don't have to worry about having it in neutral and getting run over, etc.

Paul that is great in theory but what happens if I wind up sick and my mechanically challenged SIL and daughter come home to help out for a few days? Plus my wife is scared to death of electricity and wouldn't even try. Everything 12 volt then everything is compatable. Heck she can even hook up the charger and use that.

LOL Heck I', 57 years old, have jumped 6 with 12 many times. I don't show tractors. I work them. I wouldn't have a 6 volt car/truck or tractor on the place.

Purchased 2 new battery chargers, one, a roll away that was well over 100 dollars, has 12 volt only charging plus boost. The lesser one (for my boat batts) was 50 bucks and also 12 volt only. If I still had 6 volt I'd have to buy a 3rd charger.

Didn't mean to offend anyone--sorry if I did! It's a useful trick to know for those who don't.

I've got nothing against 12V. I've got two 1949 vehicles--my 8N and a Willys CJ3A. Both are originally 6V, but the CJ has been converted to 12V. The 8N doesn't have the original Ford generator, but it does still have a 6V generator (Delco, I think).

I'm debating about whether to switch the 8N to 12V or the CJ back to 6V, so either both are original or both are converted. Probably leaning towards 12V.

(BTW, the charger I keep out at the cabin, where both live, is a 6/12 V model, which I bought specifically for that capability.)
