Hi all, I've got a '48 8N (front mount)with a Hupp Dual-Drive aux. trans as identified from John Smith's page. I can go plenty fast without the use of the Hupp. My question is: under what circumstances (other than tractor drag racing) would someone use the Hupp?

One use was to increase PTO speed for flat belt use. Check out the the Sherman Step-Up brochure on John's page for a typical sales pitch

Paul........most auxiliary trannys like the Hupp, were OVERDRIVE. Handy to drive on the road between fields. Overdrive top speeds were in the 25mph range but boy do those water fill ag-bar tires hop. And front tires wobble and wander all over the place. Slowing down is one of the reasons of the popularity of the 3-speed Sherman. ........Dell

When you are very hungry and thirsty and on your way down to the American Legion for all you can eat tacos and cheap tap beers the over drive really comes in handy.
Beyond that, I think Hokie pegged it.
When I had the Dearborn buzz saw on the back I could get 540 PTO speed at a much lower engine rpm.
Saved fuel and less wear and tear on the engine.
