aftermarket engines? (9N)

I have a 9N that the engine has been changed at some point in the past. The problem is that I can't find anythig with the ser.# that's on the block. Furthermore, the bell housing has the timing mark inspection cover on it , which from
my understanding , is from the later model 8N's. Another wierd thing about it is that the distributor is in the proper 9N/2N location. Everything else screams "9N". Any info on tracing engine ser. #'s is greatly apreciated.

From what someone said on here a few years back replacement blocks and or motors from dealers a lot of them were never S/N stamped. A 8n bell housing will fit a 9n. Early 8n's also had front mount distributors. What are your date codes on your trumpets? Around here alot of folks call what you may have a mutt.

Yeah, I think it's definately a mutt. I don't have the trumpet's date codes with me , but I was looking a them to see if I could trace it that way. I know the tractor was originally a 9n because of the brakes, tins, hubs, lights, tranny, air cleaner...etc. But the engine doesn't jive.

Not uncommon. I got a 52 8n with an industrial engine in it with a magneto. It is late 8n sytle block with timing hole but has the front mount cover to which the mag drive attaches. A late 8n block will also have the oil fill tube in a different location to make room for generator on left side. there are a few more minor things also different.

I also have a 9N with a replacement block. The boss where the SN should be is blank. All you really need to know when ordering parts is whether it is a front mount distributor or a side mount distributor.
