I'm using a home made carryall on the 3 point of my 8n to carry
firewood out of the woods where the trailer won't go. Not a
lot of wood per trip, maybe a 5' x 3' x 3" stack, but over some
pretty rough ground.

Seems pretty staightforward to me, but I am wondering if there are
any not-so-obvious dangers to using such a rig I should be aware
of - it does put a bunch of extra weight back of the wheels.

Safety is always the primary concern but we do carry 600 plus pound bush hogs and other implements on our n's. A few hundred pounds is not a big deal that requires front weight etc. common sense loading and height travel and you will be fine

all good advice.

hauling wood thru the woods, add a lot of front end weight.

whatever I think I need , I double it.

really heavy loads that have the front floating,

I drive it out in reverse. slow and just clearing the ground.

Hunting partner once mounted wheels on the very back of his carry-all for

the woods.

As an addendum to Soundguy's advice to not carry the load higher than needed, be sure it's at least as high as the bottom of the tractor. You don't want the front edge of the carryall catching on an unseen immovable object (stump, large rock) and flipping the tractor over backwards. With the carryall up as high as the bottom of the tractor, anything that will clear the tractor will clear the carryall.

On heavy loads, I like to have my hand on the lift lever, ready to slam it down if the front end starts becoming too light. My foot stays ready to stomp the clutch, too.

I just picked up a Welco 4' X 4' X18" Utility dump for my 2N.

Definitely need counter weight in the front.

If I fill it to full I can't lift it and it makes the front really light.

the obvious stuff.

strap your load to prevent it shifting and loosing it.

don't carry it higher than needed.

shock loads like tires falling into ruts and whatnot are hard on steering components and safety valves.. etc.. take it slow.

front ballast may be needed if front end is light.

just about anything hung up on a front bumper counts as front ballast.
