Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeVery old coils were easier, as they used a tar-like potting compound, whereas some of later replacement units used epoxy & it is harder to remove than if it were concrete! I have done both & they are hours & hours apart in terms of effort!

Hey, to1981, can you explain where the wires go and what coil you used?

Hi

I started trying to do this two weeks ago with my 8N.
How did you get a clean coil box? I am having major trouble getting
the resin out of the coil box.

Regards
Randy

Big Easy,

I used a drill press and drilled all the way around the coil. After removing the old tar from where I drilled, I grabbed the top of the coil in the vise and pulled, twisted and cursed until the coil came out. I then used my heat gun and acetone to clean the rest out. I then soldered a wire onto the old points where the coil and condenser wires were. It runs great now and the spark is so much better then before. I was going to go to electronic but cant really justify the price and never really have a problem with the points.

Good Luck!

Thanks, I have a drill press and will try it your way. This idea was
on the internet about seven years ago, and at that time, the author
said to open the top of the coil and put MEK in it, that the resin
would get soft, and it could be removed - this did not happen for
me. I sill have the directions for the rest of the procedure, and will
try again.
