Trying To Understand This Starter

Can someone explain whet happens when I push the starter button...what does this starter do exactly? 2 pics with the starter in relaxed position and start position. I understand it comes into contact with the back side of the flywheel. I don't understand the spring mechanism on the end of the shaft. It seems to do nothing.

Okay, the 2nd pic didnt load but shows gear further down the shaft to engage the flywheel. Still I dont see whet the purpose of the spring on the end of the shaft is for. The barrel to the right of the gear is stamped ARROW REBUILT if that means anything. Never a dull moment!

You can't see what it does under no-load conditions........transmits initial spin, then as it winds up and pulls together, there is a lock up between arm shaft & drive.
 
I assume the spring is to reduce the shock when the gear kicks back after the engine starts. Don't worry about returning the gear, it will when you start it, just makes it a little harder to reinstall the starter. HTH

It reduces the shock when the starter engages.You have the engine sitting still hit with a turning starter shaft.

.......and we also have, "I assume the spring is to reduce the shock when the gear kicks back after the engine starts."

So, what do we want to do? Vote? Call it both? You don't reckon that the function is more complicated that either of the above do you?
 
What ever you do, don't bench test that starter with the drive gear on it. It will lock the starter drive gear assembly in the start position and make it almost impossible to install the starter back in the engine.
