8N front leak

We have a front engine oil leak,in the front main or
pan region. How do we change the front main seal and
or pan gasket? We are new with the 8N but reasonable
mechanics. Gray hair and educated advise would be
appreciated. Bruce

Bruce...you will have to drop the pan, which will need you to remove the front end. 6 bolts on the bolster, radius arms, and drag links. You can just roll it out with the rad if you drain and disconnect the hoses. Oh yeah, self explanatory to remove the hood (get a buddy to help) drain the oil, and block her up good at the tranny.

Drop the pan, don't forget the 4 bolts that connect it to the bell housing. There are two at the very front and may be hard to see, easy to miss. Front main is two part rope seal. Lots of people get by with just replacing the bottom half, easy. Full replacement requires you to drop the crank or try and fish the top half out. Then reverse for install.

Pan gasket is easy, just forget everything I said about the front main. There are two others that could leak, timing cover and governor, but we won't get into that for now, until you let us know exactly where its coming from

No gray hair required, just lots of wrench time.

If you pull off the oil pan, check to be sure the oil "slinger" (part # 6310) was installed on the front of crankshaft between the gear and the belt pulley. If that is missing due to mis-assembly could be the problem.

If your leak is at the front crank rope seal, you might want to consider the one piece neoprene replacement seal..I did....Others will come along with opinions on this option..Worked good for me-3-4 yrs ago and still no leak..

Been thinking my front seal was bad on my 8N for a while. Got to looking and a pan bolt is broken off near the front on the left side and the leak is coming from that. It is in the curve of the pan near the front. Plan to fix it this winter.
