1949 8N engine oil pressure

Can be as high as 50PSI on a new rebuilt engine or as low as 5psi on and older engine. Big range of numbers but all are with in working range and the type of oil and what has or has not been done to it make a big difference

A flathead Ford engine in good shape should produce a minimum of 20 PSI hot oil pressure at idle. New from the factory it was probably 30+ PSI. At 1500 RPM you would like to see 40 PSI hot oil pressure. Pressures significantly lower than that are usually an indication of increased oil clearances due to worn bearings and/or journals.

If it is low, check the oil pump internal parts for wear and the suction line for an air leak (loose solder joint). As long as you have it apart to do that, also check main and rod bearing clearance with plastigage or micrometers.
 
I noticed on my '48 8N the other night that 30 lbs. of pressure at first start went to about 12 lbs. after it warmed up. Revving the engine would get it to about 27-28 lbs. at full governed rpm's. Oil I'm using is Shell Rotella 15-40.
 
what's yer hot / cold / throttle / idle pressures and wht oil ya running.

5-6 psi hot throttle will keep metal from bumping.. but is minimums and ain't great.

Remember - it isn't pump pressure that keeps the parts separated - it's hydro-dynamic pressure created by the crankshaft journals spinning inside a close fitting bearing shell. And if the crankshaft joutrnal oil clearances are so wide that you are only getting 5 PSI pumping pressure the excessive clearance will prevent the hydro-dynamic pressure wedge (e.g. oil film) from fully forming and parts start to rub - especially at low RPM and/or under heavy loads.
