I just pulled the left fender off my 8N to paint it, looking at another post it seems that Henry riveted the brace to the fender. Is this true and if so is is best to drill it out from the back side. Thanks ahead of time and I'll be much more active as I get more involved in my newest project.

Well I got the first one out using a combination of both methods, it came out well but was kind of a pain. At least I didn't goof up the hole. I just ordered some button head screws to replace the rivets, no way I'm putting those back in.

Fins, check out my reply to Bob Harvey before you button up your fender,as far as replaceing it with another rivet you would need a rivet gun and a heavy bucking bar, these were probably squeezed with hydralics or air press.

To remove rivet, center punch the rivet head, pilot drill with with a 1/8" #30 drill follow up and drill with a 5/16" drill. If you drill straight the head and bucktail will fall off. Drilling straight is the key as not to elongate the hole.

Hi Bob, the method I gave is the proven best way to remove rivets in my book and should remove the head of the rivet and the backside(bucktail). If the hole is drilled straight the bucktail will fall off so no need to grind. If its not drilled perfect you can tap it with a pin punch or chisel to remove it. Hole not perfect? The replacement bolt head and washer should cover up any blemish. When I restore one and want the rivet look-I use a carraige bolt. When painted looks like a rivet to me. Good Luck

| | I'm not that handy w/ a drill. I'd probably end up w/ another hole in the fender. I cut them off flush w/ the bracket & drove them out w/ a drift & a BF hammer. A little heat helped too. |
