Requesting advice before starting 2N

Before attempting to start a 2N that hasn"t been started in 18 months, a friend suggested I remove each of the spark plugs and squirt a little oil into the cylinders. I"d appreciate any advice or comments experienced Ners have to offer. Thank you.

It wont hurt to do that.
I would just fire it up myself.
When I first got my 2N it had sat unstarted for about 3 years. One tire was flat, rim shot, tractor looked bad.
I turned the gas on, turned the key on and hit the starter. It fired right up and I drove it on the trailer flat and all.

ditto what UD said.

the longer they set.. the more inclined i would be to put some oil in them.. etc..

carb and bat connections and poitns would be more of a concern for me as long as the engine was loose

I do old tractor all the time that have sat for long periods of time. I never use oil but I do put in ATF say about a 1/4 cup and let it sit at least 24 hours. That frees up sticking rings and lubes the upper part of the cylinders and also helps brake down any rust that will be in there. I then spin it over with the plugs out to clear the cylinders. Always put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc out

My 8N hadn't been started in almost 30 years. I removed the sparkplugs and put some ATF in and turned the engine by hand a couple of times a day for a couple of weeks. During this time I had the carb and distributor rebuilt. After a hassle with bad parts in the distributor; I, finally, got it right. Put in the battery and primed the carb from a dishwashing liquid bottle and hit the button and she fired off like she'd never missed a day in her life. BTW--Never had to hassle with priming the oil pump. When I changed all the fluids; I poured 2 quarts of oil into the oil filter housing. This must've primed the oil pump because I had good oil pressure from the get-go.

once you get ready to start it wouldnt hurt to check the fuel flow first either, by removing the plug on the bottom of the carb, if it hasnt been messed with there are 3 screens in the system, one on the top of the sediment bowl intake, one on top of the glass bowl, and 1 in the carb elbow, where the gas line attaches, after sitting one or more of them may need to be cleaned [ hopefully it didnt sit with gas in the tank, if so id drain that out and put in fresh gas]
