Before everyone jumps on me about this, it wasn't me who did it. Honest!

I have 2 8N's and three carbs (one came with an extra) so this is not a major problem. I rebuilt the carb on my new 8N and all is well. I had so much fun rebuilding the carb that I decided to rebuild the spare. The spare was in sad shape, the main throttle shaft was about ready to fall apart, everything inside had a nice coat of gasoline varnish on it.

I started taking everything apart, squirted some carb cleaner in the economizer jet port (the jet where you have to go in pretty deep with a small screwdriver to get to) and noticed that it looked pretty hairy down there. With some additional spraying and looking, I was able to determine that there is a crushed brass jet in there. Looks like someone tried to get it out at one point but mangled it in the process. I gently put a screwdriver in there to see if it would grab at all, but there is no chance, the head is totally stripped. Probably explains why this carb was the "spare".

In any case, what is the best way to get the mangled jet out? Should I drill it out somehow? Do they make a screw extractor that small? The casting is in nice shape, so I'd like to salvage it if possible.

Ideas?

Thanks GB! (Again!!!). I will order that screw set as I don't have any left hand ones. Luckily this is a spare so I can wait for the cheap shipping option.

Will let you all know how it goes.

Chris;

First off.......NOPE,...twernt' me that said to Boil the carb, AND....

Secondly.....You won't ever catch me 'Jammin', anything in to a soft jet, that ain't made to do the job right.!! (good way to break the carb. casting)

Facts first: Econo jet sizing is......8-32 NC!!!! ( also the # for the tap to use for refreshing the threds for the jet)

Since the ears are broken off already, and the jet is somewhat mangled,....there is only one way to remove said jet.!!!!

You ask;........what is the best way to get the mangled jet out? Should I drill it out somehow? Do they make a screw extractor that small? The casting is in nice shape, so I'd like to salvage it if possible.

YES.... you will have to DRILL the jet out!!!

If you have a "Left handed drill set", this will make your job a lot easier. (Those drill sets can be obtained for about $13-$14, from Harbor Freight!!!)

Starting with drill size 7/64....for a pilot hole, and working up to the MAX size of 9/64....you will be able to extract that jet.

Then use a tap (8-32 NC) to re-run the threds for the passage!!!!

Simple operation right!!!??????.........(depending how straight and steady you are with the drill!!!!!!!!!) DO NOT USE, any drill bit bigger than what I told you!!!!! If you are not straight with the drill,....you may just take all the threds out of the passage, and render the carb throttle body use-less!!!!

Left handed drill set ........(Drill Master....from Harbor Freight).......Most used drill set, in my carb overhaul shop!!!!!!

Post your results, and if more help needed....post back, or you can email me for my phone #, and I can talk you through carb problems!!!

Gary :)

CC,
I removed the lower portion of the main nozzle on a N tractor carb using the squared end of a small file. The previous owner snapped the nozzle leaving about 3/8 of an inch embedded in the cast body. Not sure of the diameter you are working with, you could pre-drill and use this technique. I sharpened the squared end on the belt sander to make sure is had sharp edges. Soaked it in Power Blaster for an hour or two before attempting removal. I carefully tapped the squared end into the opening and turned it out with little resistance. Did this about a month ago. Hope this helps!

Someone wiser than I will likely chime in here soon. I believe it was GB that said not too long ago that you should boil (yes BOIL) the casting in water. The cast body and brass jet have different expansion rates, therefore, the jet should come out MUCH easier when it is hot. Not sure how long you would have to boil it, but I would think long enough to heat the unit all the way through. Of course, this will only work if you have enough left of the jet for a screwdriver or other tool to grab onto. Also believe it was GB who recommends a gunsmith"s screwdriver to do jets as they have a straight head (not wedge shaped). You can grind a wedge shaped one down if you have one to spare. Other than this, I don"t know what to tell you, my rebuild on my N went really smooth (Knock on wood!). Good Luck!
