pto slips out?

every now and then when mowing my pto will slip out
of gear on me, it dont seem to have any rhyme or
reason as to when it does it, gust kinds when it
feels like it, i can mow for 3 hours and never kick
out the next time it may kick out 4-5 times in an
hour

with machine off, grab pto spline and see if there is any in / out movement.. if so.. bearing or bearing carrier or split ring may be damaged or worn.

also check detent on shifter, and make sure shifter moves full range..

There is a nut at the end of the shifter rail shaft that will sometimes come loose. Just something else to check.
