Cab adjustment for high RPMs

Hi All, so I got the spark issues resolved on my '52 8N sidemount only to find carb issues. Float was bad (it was a sinker), so got a rebuild kit and a new float went through the carb rebuild page on this site and did as instructed and cleaned out all the passages (many were plugged up bad), and got everything nice and clean.

I put it all back together, bolted it on, and it fired right up. Low RPM adjustment is perfect. The engine idles very nicely at a low RPM. The proofmeter does not work but I am guessing 400 rpms. Its nice and slow. I never heard an 8N idle so smoothly at such a low RPM.

My problem is with high RPMS. With no load, it will rev up nicely at full throttle. Under load, at full throttle, it sputters and will not run smooth. I am certain the main jet was clear when I put it back together. The old main jet needle is shorter than the one in the rebuild kit. Maybe as much as 1/8". I tried the new (longer) needle first, and had trouble getting smooth RPM at full throttle and no load - I had to screw it out until it was loose. The old (shorter) needle works good at high RPM with no load, but I get sputterin' when I put any load at the engine (it drives jerky at full throttle). Is it getting richer or leaner as I screw out the main get? I believe it is getting richer, but not rich enough under load? Or is it too rich?

Ideas?

Thanks Gary. 1/16th of a turn... that is part of my problem. I was making half turn adjustments. Looks like more finesse is needed :)

Will post back after I fiddle with it tonight.
