I am having a problem keeping my battery charged what is the best way to check and see if my generator is working. I can charge my battery up and run the tractor for a couple of hours then it quits and the battery is dead and i have to recharge it. thanks.

You may still want to hook a light bulb between the battery and the disconnected cable to see if there is any draw.

If there is, the lamp should light.

To test the voltage regulator, try jumpering the Battery terminal of the voltage regulator to the Armature terminal while running.

If the voltage across the battery terminals comes up when you do that you need a new voltage regulator.

If the voltage does not come up, you can do a motor test on the generator.

To do that, with the tractor off of course, take the belt off the generator

and remove the arm and fld wires.

Jumper the battery negative post to the arm and field terminals.

The generator should spin like a motor. If the generator does not spin take it in for check/repair.

As Royce said, getcha a volt/ohm meter - Harbor Fright! is giving them away almost. Wally world has them too.

6volts sitting - 6.8 - 7 volts running
if 12 volts....about 12.4 sitting - and close to 14 when running...

What does your ammeter indicate with engine running and shut off.

Measure the voltage between the battery terminals with the tractor off.

Assuming its still 6 volt, you should get about 6.3 on a fully charged battery.

Start the tractor and measure the same place. Should get around 7.2 volts.

Post what you find to get help with narrowing it down.

Do as Royse says.

My 1st thought is that if you are starting out with a fully charged battery, no lights on it should run a whole lot longer than a couple of hours. Before I converted my Farmall M the generator was bad. Dirtributer ignition system powered by the battery. I'd get 2 or 3 days from a fully charged 6 volt. So to add another thing, pull the battery, charge it, let it set overnight and then have it load tested. Most places will test it for free. You can check for a short by shutting every thing off....long list here, ignition switch in the off position and the lights turned off if equiped. Then disconnect a batter cable. If sparks jump as you are pulling the cable there is something drawing on the battery that shouldn't be.

Rick
