How can I determine if the voltage regulator or generator isnt working? The ampmeter shows a draw and the battery will wear down after about 4 hours of use. It"s a 1950 side mount 6v 8n. Thank you.

The ammeter will tell you if the battery is being charged.

Check the battery voltage before you start the tractor and again after the tractor is running. After voltage should be higher the before voltage. If not you have a problem.

The battery voltage is lower when its running. It"s definitely not charging. Just not sure if the problem is with the voltage regulator or generator or both.

time to test it then.

first, polarize the genny,

jumper battery to armature with her not running.. start up and check.. any change?

no?

try this.. with machine running, jumper field to ground at the genny.. any change?

yes? get a new vreg.. field ckt is bad.

no?

jumper field to ground, AND jumper bat to arm.

any change?

yes? get a new reg.. cutout and or field ckt is bad.

no?

unjumper.. shut engine down.. remove belt from gen.. jumper field to ground and bat to arm.. genny should spin.

if yes, check wireing and redo above tests.. wires in harness must be damaged or hooked up wrong.

if no spin.. take genny in to DR for a checkup.

Thanks. Does the key have to be on to polarize the genny?

the key sends power to the ignition coil.. nothing else.

why would it matter if the key was on.

key has NOTHING to do with the generator or regulator.
