Doing some TLC on my 1950 front mount and decided to stop hot wiring it and put a real switch on. Got a new switch in a few days form this site and installed it this weekend. It cranked up an ran fine for about 5 minutes and suddenly stopped. Went thru my usual carb tap, check for spark, cleaned dist to regain spark, finally jumpered the switch terminals and it runs. Removed switch and am back to hotwiring to start. Switch shows continuity/no continuity depending on key position while holding switch. What am I missing? |

| I put a generic car switch on mine from NAPA. Been working good for 2 years. I stayed with a key switch cause I wanted it grand kid safe. I just don't turn to start with it. Still have to press the switch by the shifter.

| A good source for 2 wire key switches? How about your local motorcycle shop? I know a lot of older bikes used a 2 wire switch and were decent quality and, for obvious resons, waterproof. I"d get one for a street/trail bike. Good luck. |

| | The ubiquitous Ford tractor ignition switch problem is well known. The quality of the aftermarket switches is abominal. It is not uncommon to have a new one fail within hours or even minutes. Go to a GOOD auto parts store and buy a decent automotive ignition switch and you will be good for 25 years or more. Dean |

| | FWIW I went to what I thought was a 'good' auto parts store (NAPA) and bought a watreproof toggle in lieu of a keyswitch. The switch fell apart into pieces in my hand when I tightened a connector. If theres a NAPA number for a 2 wire keyswitch, please post it! Bill |

| | Why must you have a two wire ignition switch? That said. most ignition switchs intended for a late 40s, early 50s vintage pick up truck should work nicely. Dean |

| I guess I don't' just figured that's what was in there. Single pole keyswitch, two contacts. |

| | " Removed switch " If you want to test the switch, put it back on the tractor. Get a jumper wire w/ alligator clips on both ends. (tip # 50) As soon as the tractor stops, put the jumper wire on it. If that doesn't work, move on to the troubleshooting steps ericlb suggested. Or just assume your first test was adequate & buy another switch as TOH suggested. |

If the problem went away with the switch the problem is almost certainly in the switch. From the description it may be a heat sensitive failure that only occurs when the switch warms up after the tractor has run for a while. I'd get a new switch.

| if your losing spark in 5 minutes with a new switch id replace the condenser then check the coil if it does it again, the problem is while your cleaning the distributor to regain spark the part is cooling down, regaining its continuity, thus tricking you into thinking youve fixed it, the other thing is the minute it stops check the tap in the bottom of the carb, it takes about that long for the float bowl to run out of fuel, caused by a clogged screen, 1 in the tank, 1 in the sediment bowl, 1 in the carb elbow, make sure it is indeed a spark problem |

| Just rewired my '50 8N. Got a new TISCO key switch - it was faulty. They sent a new one the next next day (it worked fine). If it happens again, I'll install a heavy duty toggle. |
