Have been in contact with seller - regarding this:

http://modesto.craigslist.org/grd/3258954741.html

Was told by my tractor mechanic not to purchase a non running 8n for anything over $800 - has box scraper and discs (might use the scraper would probably never use discs) - said it was running when parked, has 6 volt front mount and engine 'stuck' - apparently someone came over and said it was the starter....

Not sure if to go for it or not, or save up a little more and look for a Jubilee. Thoughts on price?

Lee

The Jubilee has a cute name, but has some problems you dont need. Look for a 600 series with a piston type hydraulic pump. The vane pump is OK IF you use the right oil.

I'm a long way from California Lee, but I bought a running one for half that,

and there are several running ones listed that "need nothing" for less than $2000.

They've been out there a while too. One for almost a year.

Round here a tandum disk in decent shape, not great but usable that will work on an N is about 600 bucks, 300 for a single, box blade 300....

Thanks, I have no use for disc and really no use for the box scraper - plus do not want to try to sell them if I bought as package - so, think I will walk away from this one - I hesitated on a Jubilee earlier this year and it was gone in a second so that was a bit frustrating - however, still can get stuff done now with what I have so no rush.

If you're not in a hurry then hold out for a Hundred Series Ford. Better rear axle, better hydraulics, etc.
NAA Jube was a transition tractor so kind of a stepchild. Rear end parts much harder to find if you ever need them.

UD's probably right about the value.. however that said. I smply am not interested in N's anymore for some of the reasons the other posters mentioned.

too easy to get a slightly more updated tractor for similar money as a good N or NAA

unless you NEED thos implements and want a N project.. look for something else.

He's right at the price point.
Figure $300 for the box blade and $300 for the disc if it's good and has good bearings.
Now you're down in your $8 -$900 range for the tractor.
I wouldn't just write off the engine at this point. If you bought it pour a cup or two of ATF or MMO down each spark plug hole and let it sit for a couple weeks. Then try bumping it over with the starter a few times. You'd be surprised how often they will free up.

I would bet money it ain't stuck just from the starter. Besides the engine being stuck with ten+ year of sitting the valves will likely be stuck also. For $1500 around here you can get one that's in better shape and drive it on your trailer. If interested in the scraper blade ask if he would like to sell it separate. If he sez no than contact him in about six months/ a year or so and ask again. My bet at that price is he still has it.
