I recently bought a 1950 8n that runs great but when you start it cold (80degree day) it shifts perfectly but as it warms up to operating temp it will shift fine in between gears but if you put it in neutral and let the clutch out and then put the clutch back down it will not go into any gear without grinding severly but if I let it cool off a while it is fine I have experminted with the freeplay but it works best when set by the book at 3/4 inch I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas before I split it. Thank You |

| No I am not shifting on the move I am only shifting while stopped if you push the clutch in and stop you can change gears just fine but if you put it in neutral and say get off the tractor to do something and get back on push in the clutch and try to select a gear that is when it grinds when it is hot cold it is fine |

| | got any oil drips from the bellhousing weep hole? might have an oil, grabby clutch. try this.. next time you get off and leave it in neutral, stomp the clutch and rev the engine up and down a few times and pump the pedal while doing so... then wait a second and try to shift. if it shifts.. you likely got a sticky clutch.. and may even have a clogged weep hole... |

The gears are not straight cut in an 8N. They are helical cut gears. It has nothing to do with the gears being straight cut or helical cut. The reason you can't shift these tractors on the go is because the transmissions are not synchronized. |

| These tractor have straight cut gears in them and are not like cars and trucks so you should not start out in 1st then go to 2nd etc you put it in the gear you want and take off in that gear. Also as the engine gets warm so does the transmission so the oil gets thinner so it takes move time for the transmission gears to stop when you push the clutch down you can not heavy them old heavy gears it takes time to slow them down plus if you idle the engine down that helps |

| Are you shifting while the tractor is moving? These transmissions were designed to be shifted when completely still. Select the gear for the job at hand and go. Do not shift on the fly. |
