Ever since I"ve owned it, my "49 front distributor 8N has been showing about 20 lbs. of oil pressure when cold and ZERO oil pressure when hot, but it still starts and runs fine, isn"t making any noises and has enough power!

The oil pressure gauge works fine. That is more or less the actual oil pressure. Not more than 1 or 2 pounds when hot, at the most.

It does spray for insects pretty well, though, but as long as it"s running as well as it is, there is NO WAY I am going to do an overhaul.

I"m running a mixture of 40 wt. detergent and Lucas oil treatment in the crankcase.

I sure hope I don"t throw a rod. That would be expensive.

they can run for a long time with very little oil pressure at idle.just avoid idling for long periods.other than plain worn bearings or pump there is a couple of other things that can cause this.one is a loose pickup tube on the pump.its not at all uncommon.you can check yours by reaching up inside drain hole when you change the oil and see if pickup moves if it does its loose.the other thing that causes this occasionaly on a rebuild is that these engines had no cam bearings.if bores in block,or the cam itself gets worn the rebuild should include replacing cam,or having cam journals ground and bearings installed in block.but thats very often overlooked.I personally have been running one for 25 years that has very little oil pressure at idle,so your not alone.it desperatly needs overhauled but i cant seem to find time.

Bill,

My 50 8N is the same way. When I bought it about a year ago, oil had water in it and the gauge didn't work, but it ran really well. The price couldn't be beat and I had to "rescue" it from the PO.

I have replaced a lot of parts; bearings, oil pump rebuild, valves, polished crank which plasti-gaged to .003 and too many others to list. I have tried two brand new gauges and no change in OP since original rebuild. 25 cold and about 5-7 hot idle. I don't know what else to do, wish I could help you out, but were in the same boat...

-Jeff
