My 48 8n has been in pieces for years since I started restoring it. I finally finish it today. I tried to start it and the started won"t turn. The solinoid clicks loudly when I press the starter switch. That"s it. This tractor has been converted to 12v. Where do I begin?

Before you start the tractor make sure you have oil pressure. If you start it and don't have oil pressure you will destroy the engine in a very short, like in minutes, time. I pull the plugs and spin the engine with a 12 volt battery, key off, until I get at least 3-5 pounds of oil pressure. If this does not work on the first try you may need to prime the oil pump.

Get your jumper cables and jump ground to starter housing. On positive, jump brass starter bolt to battery positive. Maks sure you are out of gear. If it spins properly, starter is ok and you have an electrical connection problem.

The battery is good. I just finished rewiring the tractor today. All wires are new nothing smaller than 12awg all connectors are crimped and soldered on. All mateing surfaces on the tractor were sanded down to bare metal before screwing down wires. Battery cables are 2awg.

Now the starter grounded to the frame I'm not sure of. It's been about a year since I mounted the started. I'll check it tomorrow. Thanks!

" The solinoid clicks loudly when I press the starter switch."

The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Check your connections! To include the mating surface between the starter and bell housing.

I couldn't stand it. I just went out pulled the starter and discovered I had never tighten the brass grounding L braket that grounds the solinoid to the starter. Now my engine turns over. Thanks for the help!

That is not a grounding bracket.Do a study on how a starter works.
