Brother dropped off his old N today and wanted some work done...guess it'll cost him a case of beer. 6v front dist unknown year. He blew a head gasket and put in a new felpro. Told me he wanted a new cam gear after I did mine and a rewire, points, dist overhaul and general tune up.

I've replaced everything I was asked of and now I've got a backfire through the carb. Bout set the dam thing on fire.

Its wired right and the head was an isolated incident. My question is, is it more likely that I've time timed cam 180 off or just too lean?

Seems I've gotten to the bottom of it...

Pulled valve covers and timing (and lash while I was in there) was correct. Did comp test again, no change. Pulled distributor and looks like I installed the "only goes one way" front dist the wrong way. :x

I noticed a small crack in the housing and when I installed the cam gear, the slot was a little wallered out. Guess it happened before. Valve timing was correct but ignition was 180 off. I'll post back when she's running and delivered.

JC
After you did this work....
Was it back firing when you were cranking on it or once you got it running ?

It was backfiring while cranking. Tried a little ether and leaned the carb out but have not got it running. I just did a cold (obviously) compression test and got 105, 85, 85, 80 on 1-4. Guess I'll pull the valve covers for a look...

Cam gear only goes one way(?) four holes are offset and only line up in correct position right?

I'll check comp tomorrow after I get a little time in the deer stand. Gears went on with marks lining up every two turns of the crank. Guess it could be the wrong two turns...

Doh!

I do not think if the marks are right that it can be wrong. Crank turns 2 turns for every one turn of the cam so they have to line up right or wrong not other way. If you count the number of teeth on the crank gear and the cam gear you will find that one has twice that of the other so not way to get it wrong unless the gears are marked wrong.
NOW as for the deer stand either your season starts a long time before ours does or you better not be seen by the wrong people. Here in Missouri bow season opens Sept. 15th

Well if your 110% sure you have the firing order right then yep could be the timing of the cam but if you lined every thing up like it should be not likely. If running lean choking it would change that and that is the easy way to see which it is

I would do a compression check, if valve time is off you will see it.
