I took my 8N completely apart and have been repainting and replacing all the worn parts. I am finally getting to the rear end. I tried to keep it all in order but with painting and time it got a bit mixed up. I figured no big deal with the manual and parts catalog I could easy get it back together. I am having a bit of trouble though as it had a bunch of metal gaskets in different places which I'm not sure about. It looks like they have been replaced with more of a paper type gasket? I do not see the metal ones offered unless they are not used as gaskets but spacers? Does anyone have a real good diagram or picture of where everything goes including the gaskets? When I took it apart it was missing one inner seal and I don't think all the metal gaskets were in the right spots anyway. My serial # is 339764. |

| Thanks , Bruce. It looks like I put a paper gasket on the end of the trumpet then the backing plate then shims held on with the bearing retainer. Do the shims only go on one side?
I purchased a pack of shims and they are a paper/cardboard not the metal. Will these work? My metal ones were used as gaskets throughout the rear and are rusted and beat up. I am also concerned metal on metal shims would leak?
EDIT: I got it all back together. Not sure if it is 100% right but its back together.

| Simple test for the bearing pre-load of the rear axles. With rear jacked up, rotate one wheel. The other wheel should rotate in the opposite direction. If both rotate the same, too tight, add a shim or two, either side. If other side does not move, remove a shim or two. I prefer to leave it on the loose side. |

| | They're shims for setting the bearing pre-load on the rear axles. There is a section on that in the I&T FO4 manual. John Smith also has it written up better than the manual on his website: http://www.oldfordtractors.com/rep.htm#q15 |
