Yea, Isaac slammed us good, especially my parents down near McComb MS..Anyways-got two freezers(chest type)on a generator..How long should they be left on the generator, then how long can they be taken off of the generator before going back on the generator? Both freezers are approx 1/2 to 3/4 full which I know fuller is better and also know to leave em closed-don"t open em..Generators are noiosy so no sleep with it running--anyway any advice appreciated.

Tom not enough info. Need to know how full the freezer si, how old ECT.

The less in it the more ofen it has to run.....the older the more often....ECT.

Daughters father in law put a str8 pipe on his genny then clamped flex pipe onto that and then added a car muff.....helped a lot!.

My Onan generator runs on a 6 gallon boat tank.It has its on fuel pump so you can put a hose into a car tank or truck tank.It runs at 1800 rpm so noise is not a problen.People forget these are emergency tools and dont need to run full time.

Yea, I did the shut of the breaker and plug the genny into a dryer outlet the day after Ivan blew through here and took down power at my house for 8 days. 1st evening after the storm, was standing on the front porch and realized the street light on my power pole was on!! And the power lines to it were laying on the ground behind my truck and the lines 2 poles down stream were laying on the ground. Ran in the house and pulled the plug from the dryer receptacle and the light went back off!! Never did that again....

Until recently, I've been without a genny. Wished I had one the past 2 years. Once for an ice storm and once for high winds. Couldn't see paying $1500+ for a 3000 watt honda. Finally found a used one that was started once. Still had paint on the muffler. It was made in China. A 3500W RV genny. Very quiet, only 68 db and a kid can start it. The RV receptical is rated at 120v and 30 amps. It starts my 3/4 hp well pump without a problem. I also bought it because I can't stand the smell of a 2 cycle chain saw. Craftsman sells an 18 inch 4 peak hp electric chain saw. The generator powers the saw like it nothing. Saw starts every time, no smell and no noise. Love it.

I only paid $170 for generator. If it dies on me, I'm not out much. Went on line and found the owner's manual and a place to buy parts for it.

It also has a 220 v recept, rated at 15 amps.

I think it can run 11 hours on 4 gallons at half out.

If I were to buy another generator, I definately would buy an RV generator because of the noise factor, weighs 100 pounds and has a 30 amp out.

As for how long I would run the genny, I would do the ice cream test. When the ice cream gets soft, turn the generator on and eat the ice cream.

George

I just bought a 5600 Watt Craftsman(2 yrs. old-not run last year) for $200 from my neighbor (moving). I may demand my $ back - took 3 pulls to get it running ! Happy camper.

We have not had a major cane here in our part of FL for several years now but we did have them frequently around 2000. Problem is that with the A/C off and outside now inside air over 90+ it takes a lot less time for the freezer to warm up. If your freezer cycles off it is as cold as it needs to be, if it keeps running it needs to run. I would wrap it in some insulation or blankets to help it keep cold just be sure not to block air to the coils. I always ran mine till about 11pm, shut the genny down, got some sleep for a few hours and fired the genny up again. We have went without power for about a week more than once.

Do you really believe 10 cents a day... I know for a fact its better to leave it B than to run a gen on it 3 are 4 hours a day BTDT and lost it....

While we are on freezers,,, when mom moves on to greener pastures the freezer will go also... I do not seen any savings in keep'n a freezer stocked the cost to run it out weighs the savings... I have un-pluged the one in another house I own it cost a buck a day to run the freezer... My light bill went from $64 a month to the minimum around $25... I gave the freezer to my son they have 4 kids they need it....

I know this will not help you much right now but I keep soda bottles filled with water in my freeze to take up free space and also so as to help hold the cold when the power goes off. Also putting blankets over them helps a lot so as to help keep the cold in. Isaac it giving us so much needed rain here in Missouri right now

Any unused space in a freezer fill with 1-gal plastic jugs of water.

Water heat capacity and of fusion is very large, will keep things cool a long time

Just went through this for 4 days here, after the tornados. Using a thermometer in the freezer got down to running every 12 hours for a hour or so. Didn't lose any food. Good luck- joe-

Just bought a new chest freezer.Label says average electricity cost is 37.00 a year,or 3 bucks a month.10 cents a day, this will buy a kilowatt in many places. So there is no need to run a generator full time.Friend tried it, used 10 gallons of gas in 24 hours.

Yea, I know where your folks are. I go down to Mike's Tractor in Summit often, I'm in New Hebron, about 40-50 miles. Most of the towns are serviced by Entergy and the rural areas by REA. My property is next to Southern Pine (REA) and their trucks have just come in (10:40 PM) so I guess they got most all the area around here up and running.

Our 4500 k gen will run the whole house, which includes 2 refrigeraters. I turn off the main breaker then plug the gen into the dryer plug. It will back feed all the rooms. Not quite big enough to run the whole house ac. Just a note, it takes a special plug for most gen 220's that plugs in then turns. I have a cord already made up that has that plug with the dryer plug on the other end. BTW, harbor freight has the 7000k 8750 max watt] gen on sale for $599 [reg. $699.]. It would probably run the whole house ac along with the rest.

I do hope you reallize how increably dangerous this is to others. All it takes is someone flipping on that whole house breaker to kill a lineman working on your "dead" line.

I advocate getting a proper transfer switch or at least a lockout between two breakers in your panel.

Please be safe!

Line men treat all lines as hot.I have seen them put short circuits on lines they are working on .Further more do you think that you little generator could handle the load that is on the line for miles down the road.

if the genny can tote both, get one started, then when it stabilizes load in a few seconds.. start the other..

if froze hard.. they should be safe for at least 6 hrs.

could top em off the last couple hours before bed, then let them go overnight.. then get back on them early am..

in 04/05 we did that in fl when the hurricanes took up residence.

our reefer wanted to be cooled every 2 hrs.. but out chest freezers never did dethaw. i let one go 8hrs with no cooling at it was still frosty..

good luck to you!

If UNOPENED they can hold freezing tips for 24 hours, i'd probably give them a charge every 12 or so, but thats only if they are left unopened that is the main thing. Just what i have been told.

There is no time limit on running the generator with freezers, etc. on them. As far as the length of time they can stay off without thawing, that varies. No more than 48 hours or so. I would say intermiting running would be best. Say, 4 hours on and 4-6 hours off. By the way, I'm near McComb and I think I hear on the local news the power has almost been restored in that area. We went off at 2 AM and came back on at 2 PM.

CharnerL, I said near McComb because lots of folks don"t know where Bogue Chitto, Norfield and Johnston Station are located--I55 goes through my Dad"s place just north of Johnston Station exit about 2 miles.I imagine they get cities going before they worry about rural areas.
