Anytime you file you compromise a rather tightly controlled fit. The maximum allowable side clearance on an 1-1/8 SAE 6B (sliding) spline fit is .002" with no more tha .006" out of parallel per foot. That's darn little filing.

guess you could file it to get it out, to save cutting.. but if it's bad.. I'd think I'd want a new shaft anyway.. once twisted.. who knows when it may twist more or fracture...

I have had to do a split one time for a shaft that would not come out,,, I filed the splines straight and the shaft came out,,, I even reused the shaft

All you need is a file that fits the spline perfect,,, a good one will do the job rather quick...

I have viewed that pic, my question is, if I do a rear split does
that get the big drive shaft out of the way, like in the pic???

Wedges at front axle to prevent tipping is a good plan too.

Pretty darn easy. Drain the oil, disconnect brake linkages, muffler mount, PTO shifter, and any rear wiring, unbolt the center section, and roll the two halves apart. One man can do it with no problems using a jack stand and floor jack. I suggest finding a nice smooth and level concrete surface for the job

Probably 1-2 hours to split and another 1-2 to reconnect everything if there are no stubborn fasteners.....

when I do the rear split, does that get the drive shaft out of
the way above the hyd pump so I can cut my pto shaft?

Yes, on a rear split, the drive sleeve just slides off after you pull the tractor apart. Don't forget to put it back in before you bolt it all back together!

Jeff,

Rear split is actually easier than a front split.
No tin, wires, gas lines, radius rods or tie rods to deal with.
I block the front half up under the tranny then use a floor jack to roll the rear half back.
I Always use wooden cribbing to block up a tractor as I just do not trust steel on steel (or cast iron) jackstands.
What is wrong that you have to split it?

Photo is not of a rear split or even of an N but does show proper cribbing with wood blocking.
