What is the best way to know if used tire chains will work with a 12.4-28 ag bar type tire? I currently have ladder style chains that are 10" long and 20" wide which I struggle to be long enough even though many of the ladder rungs have settled between the lugs. I see an add for 12'8" long 24" wide used duo grip type chains which will have the benefit of staying on top of the lugs but an extra 2'8" of tire chains seems to long. Add says they will fit tires up to 4"5" diameter but my tires measure 4" diameter. Can someone confirm if they will fit on my tires? Thanks, TB |

| glad my biggest math problem right now is how much power to run and how long to run the power to cad plate my wheels. anyone how what thickness the plating was? |

| That's because you're measuring the length of the outside chain, and that outside
chain fits down over the edge of your tire closer to the rim, not around the center of the tire.
I don't have the measurement off the top of my head, but if someone else doesn't
have it handy I'll measure my chains for you tomorrow.
Too long is better than too short. They can be cut down to fit. |

Your math is fine but your statement of the problem is incorrect. The diameter in question is not the outside diameter of the tire. It is the circle the side chains make whiich is a function of the width of the cross chains when laid over the tire and generally closer to the diameter of the wheel/rim. So overall length = 3.14 x 28 = 88 inches for cross chains that go from bead to bead. Longer if the cross chains are shorter. Shorter if the cross chains are longer.

| | Understood and very well stated. Obviously, there are many combinations of chain length and width that will work which would cause the chain to be nearer and further fom the rim diameter. 24" wide chains on a 12" wide tire would wrap around the sides of the tire by 6" on each side. On a 48" tire the side chains would then be on a 36" diameter (~9'5" circumference). Based on that, 12'8" chains would have to be cut much shorter to work on a 12.4-28 tire. Always helps to talk through a problem. The answer is what I suspected although I hoped someone would say they somehow made it work on their tractor which is why I asked. Of course one could if they cut the chains shorter or used chain tensioners. Thank you, TB |

| I know I'm gonna sound like an axxWhole. Didja go to beyond the 5th grade? Pretty simple math to find out what you need to know. Yep the info is here, and some smarter folk will show up. H.P.H. |

| | 48" tire diameter x 3.1459 = 12'6" circumference. Sounds great but... My 10' chains would theoritically fit a circumference of 38" (120/3.1459) but actually fit on a 48" tire. This leads me to believe 12'6" chains may be too long. I was hoping someone would know by actual experience. TB |
