I replaced the PTO shaft on my '46 2N last night. When the 4 bolts that hold it in-place are slightly loose the shaft turns fairly easily by hand. When I tighten the bolts as little as finger tight, the shaft will not turn. Is this normal? I am assuming that it is from the bearings being slightly compressed as I tighten the bolts but before I put the fluid back in the tractor I figured that it would be a good idea to make sure that I am not doing something wrong or that something is not lining up quite right.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to see

Might loosen the bolts on the pump and then turn the shaft. let everything find a new center, then tighten bolts.

Check the length of the new one against the old one. If new one is longer, grind the end down.

Yes, I have a gasket on it. It is a brand new shaft as I decided to upgrade to a 1-3/8 shaft.

put a blob of grease on the end o fthe shaft.. stab it in pull it out.. grease smashed flat? / gone from lack of clearance?

if so.. :) I might grind 1/16" of fthe nd fo the shaft.

sounds like a chinese clearance problem to me.. :)

another test..

cut a gasket using yours as a template. cut it out of some thick gasket paper.. exhaust gasket paperboard.. put that on. if it turns fine.. um.. I'd bolt it in tight... :)

I put the new shaft beside the old shaft and the difference in length, if any, could not be seen by just looking at them. However, I took some 1/32 gasket paper and cut out a gasket using the standard gasket as a template as you suggested. I installed the fabricated gasket along with the gasket that came with the new shaft and still had the same problem. I then cut out a second gasket and installed it again with all three gaskets and it worked. The additional 1/16" in gasket material was what it required. Thank you for you suggestions!
