My 2N was running at extremely high RPM, and blew the head gasket. I am planning on replacing the governor and head gasket, am I doing the right thing? (I already put new plugs in and rebuilt the carb)

Hey Bruce nice article in the n-news when can we begin
seeing 75 tips? Referred to your 50 tips I have printed and
keep in the shed many times for my 52 8n. My old 8n made it
on the cover of the n-news one time many years ago. happy
to say I have every issue. Just something about these old ford
tractors.

Well, not quite oil, not sure what I was thinking when I typed that, but its not antifreeze, just loosing compression there.(I know there is no oil in the head) Linkage to gov. is connected properly, and engine over-revs no matter what I try to do. Linkage seems to all work fine when tractor is not running, but doesn't respond well when running.

The fact that it is all of a sudden blowing oil from around the head gasket(at cylinder 1) is why I know the gasket is bad. The reason I believe the governor is bad is because it is revving way too high(which the governor should keep it from doing, as that is its purpose). This is what led to my diagnosis.

" blowing oil from around the head gasket"

Oil? There are no oil lines in the head.

Coolant maybe?

Wire brush it off & see what it is.

Bubbles in the radiator?

I'd still check the compression before I pulled the head. And look for "steam-cleaned" plugs.

As to the governor being the cause......well, just because I've never seen or heard of something like that.....and my weak mind just can't make the connection......doesn't mean it wasn't the cause.

Before you drop $200+ on a new governor, make 100% sure the linkage is connected correctly.

Then, start the tractor & hold the governor to carb linkage if it starts to over-rev.

" am I doing the right thing? "

Probably not.

What makes you think it blew a head gasket & that the over revving was caused by the governor itself?

In other words, tell us your troubleshooting steps that led to those conclusions.

Which, FWIW, makes not a bit of sense to me.

I don't think so, i checked the linkage over and lubed everything to make sure it wasn't hanging up, and everything seemed to move.

Any chance you may have bent or caused the linkage to the Gov. to hang up and cause the high rpm. Gov.may be fine.
