I've got a 1952 8N sidemount dist. and 12 volt conversion with GM alternator. I rebuilt the tractor 8 years ago and put in a new 525 cranking amp battery at that time. It still seems to work fine. I just got a new battery (less than a year old) given to me so figured I would put it in the tractor. It is huge and barely fit in the compartment and it is 825 cranking amps. Hooked it up and the tractor runs smoother than I remember in years. It used to have a miss that is gone now too? Would the more powerful battery be putting more juice to the ignition system for better spark? It has points, not electronic. I'm real happy it runs so good but not sure why. Thanks Bob |

| bob, you have to excuse some of the guys on here.....they mean no harm and are of no danger to others. They Assume that everyone is a knowledgeable as they THINK (sorry guys the opening was just too big) they are.....
A simple batt change to a higher amp batt is not going to make the tractor run better if the charging system is doing it's job. So that goes back to the "CLEAN/TIGHT/Brite" thing. In your case you changed out the batt......and by default got a better batt to terminal connection.

| My guess is that when you changed batteries, you may have gotten a better connection than you had with the old battery. Moving wires around may have given you a better connection (knocked rust loose, etc.) Just a guess. |

| | very likely possibility. changing out the battery allowed for a renewed connection.. that makes a bit of difference... |

| | NO IF your alternator is working correctly anyway.. system voltage is EXACTLY the same with a lower amp hour battery as with a large amp hour battery. and even a low output gm 10si puts out about 10x the current needed to fire a set of points. your thoughts of hte bigger battery making it run better are psychosomatic and akin to red sports cars going faster than green ones.. |
