Help, I am going crazy. I can not get engine oil pressure on my 1948 8N. I have blowen out every line. When I apply air pressure to the outlet T air comes out the pump inlet hole. I have completely rebuilt the pump. New small gears, new large drive gear, and had the bushing reamed to fit the gear shaft. Have checked the pump pickup tube and canister for leaks. Have primed the pump several times and started the engine after priming. Have removed the spring and plunger completely and tried it and have installed washers to increase the oil pressure. Nothing helps. I stil canot get oil to come out the outlet T at the back of the engine. The pump gears are turning when the engine turns over. One other thing, I tried turning it by hand with the pickup tube in oil and it pumps. Help, help. Thanks, basil

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeWell, I don't know what the "top half" is on a flat head, but I guess tat isn't important. On some motorcycles where I can change out the cylinders & pistons & leave the crank assy un-touched, it makes sense. Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Yes, if it is pumping, there should be oil coming out at all the bearings, etc. See the attached oil circuits.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeWhat is different that you are doing now, than what you were doing here: "One other thing, I tried turning it by hand with the pickup tube in oil and it pumps."?

Yes, I turned the pump with the drive gear as fast as I could with the pick up tube in oil and it pumped oil out the small oval shaped hole in the casting. I did primp it prior to turning it over. I also primed it many times with it installed down through the plunger hole, but it did not do the job. Basil

Like someone said,You should check the pressure against a known good gauge. You could get a cheapie gauge at an auto parts store, hook it up and see what happens. You could also disconnect the line at the oil filter, sit a pan under it,and crank it and see if oil comes out. A heater hose attached to the line going into the governor will work to determine flow. lha

Sounds like a missing galley plug since you said you can't get oil out of the T at the back of the engine.

Hope it isn't your pump gears having too much end-play.

Someone else will jump in and help.

Best wishes,

Greg

Check your oil pressure gauge, it may be faulty.

You know there is an oil drian hole just in front of the plunger. Could it be that the plunger may not be seating and allowing the oil to return to the pan. Try to apply air pressure to the oil filler tube so pressure will build up in the pan and force the oil up the pick up tube while you are cranking. It helps to remove the plugs while you are trying this.

I have the oil pan off. I am feeding the pick up tube with from a bucket of oil. Pick up tube canister is fully emerged in oil. What I am saying is that the rebuilt pump is not picking up the oil. Oil should be spraying everywhere with the egine running, but there is zip. (no oil)

Was your engine recently overhauled? Did you or the rebuilder perhaps leave out the galley plugs? Its happened before.

Should there be oil dripping everywhere if the pump is working and the gally plugs were left out. The engine has been rebuilt but the top half only.
