Hi, the 1951 8N that my grandfather bought new was restored by me and was given back to my sister in May. Nobody wanted to pay the big $ I thought it was worth, so I just decided to keep it in the family.

It has had a slight problem that I need to work on now. There is a small leak of hydraulic fluid from the PTO shaft. I guess it"s coming from a bad seal around the shaft"s output, so my sister"s ordering a new seal and gasket.

Before I tear into it, does anybody have any advice? Is it going to be an easy fix (I hope, I hope)?

Thanks.

Just to give an update: we"re gonna do the conversion. I checked prices; they went from a high of $158.30 to a low (on Ebay auction) of $80.00, which is what I got. Shipping added another $10 to $19.25.

I guess it pays to shop around. I wish I had known that when I first started the restoration.

Thanks again for you help.

it's probably one of the easiest repairs you can do on an N.. just above changing the oil.

When I did mine I was lucky enough to have a steep enough embankment that I lost no oil. AS a first timer it too all of 20 min. Just follw the advice posted......and watch out fer yer toes!

John,

Yes it is. I changed both of my 8N's with a new shaft like you are suggesting. Standard connector at that point.

The task only takes a few minutes. The first one I did while I was working on the hydraulic pump. Took me longer to get that one out since I was a newbie. 2nd one was a snap, took about 10-15 minutes total (nose-down in a ditch). A little oil will come out with the old shaft, not enough to worry about. The shaft is only held in place by the 4 bolts, and the old gasket. Mine were stubborn, but that was mainly the old gasket. New one should slide right on in! The whole thing is one unit, just pull out the old one and shove in the new one.

You will need a new PTO gasket when you install the new one. Part # C5NN747A from this site. Be sure to completely clean/scrape off the old one.

If you plan to use a mower, do yourself a favor and get an OTC (Over Running Clutch).

Hope this helps.

Jimps in GA.

Thanks for the suggestions! How's this for a plan? Tell my sis to forget about the oil seal and get a 1 1/8"-to-1 3/8" Conversion Kit. (9N-700-38).

When it gets here, park the tractor nose-low.

Remove the 4 PTO bolts.

Pull out the old shaft, oil seal and bearing.

Install the new assembly.

Tighten the 4 bolts.

Is it really that simple?

Thanks.

If you don"t have a seal driver set, buy one. They"re only about $30 and well worth it. Also, have your sister buy 3 seals. They"re only $5 each and that"s how many it took me to get it right. Or maybe that"s just me...:-)

Here is what Bruce says--------------------------PTO SEAL REPLACEMENT --- While you have the PTO shaft out, it would be a good time to replace the seal on it. It"s got two spring clamps around it. Take your needle nose pliers & remove the one in the front. Then, hang the shaft & bearing housing in your vice & tap the butt end of the shaft; the bearing cap will come off (and the shaft will land on your foot). Then, remove the other spring clip from the other side of the seal. At this point, remember that you never bought a seal driver & go get a B socket & drive the seal out. If you have the new style seal, the white side goes out. Put some grease on it..Bruce.
