I looked at a 9N recently that had a strange modification that has me baffled.Someone has drilled a hole in the differential housing at the back of the tractor to the left of the top link rocker point and down a little. There is a broken off grease fitting in it.I didn't hear it run but the dealer says the engine is first rate. However, there is that added grease fitting, a car steering wheel, the instument panel has been cracked at both guages and welded, the governor housing is all goobered up with tar or caulking like it is cracked and the front axle pivot is a bit loose.Overall it looks like it has been beaten half to death probably pushing snow by the look of the lower hitch arms.My first instinct is don't walk away from it RUN.But I still can't get that grease fitting out of my mind.Someone went to a lot of trouble to drill and tap a hole in the casting but I can't imagine why.Anybody got any ideas? |

| just wondering, .. what size is the grease fitting? the larger ones like on heavy equipment large trucks ect have 1/8 inch pipe thread, on them it could it be the grease fitting is being used to plug a hole, put there for some other reason years ago, and not as a grease fitting? |

| | the underside of that area on the rear casting don't have much back there.. just the pinion and ring gear and axles.. and those are splash lubed. i could almost see one on an axle trumpet in some cases if a improvised seal had been fashioned to keep oil out of the trumpet.. but at the rocker? the pump runs in oil.. so if it had hyds.. grease back there wouldn't help. if it had no pto or hyds and had delete plates.. I can perhaps see somone running a light grease in there if it had worn axle seals and they were too cheap to put in sure seals or soemthing.. but then.. that leaves the trans? was it running in grease too? again.. too cheap for a 4$ input seal? does make you wonder... often times I think people don't realize what they are doing might not help a situation and just do it. |
