How to Install 8N Thermostat

My 1950 8N was causing the gas tank to boil so I checked and found that there was no thermostat. I installed the 180 degree thermostat pictured. I put it in the upper radiator hose close to the radiator. The side facing up in the picture faces the radiator.

I started the tractor and the radiator boiled over after a few minuets. What went wrong? I recently read that I should fill the radiator so it just covers the core. I had filled it so it almost covered the round pipe looking object but still had some good air space. Did I install the thermostat correctly?

Missouri Farmer,I would also place the thermastat in the hose close to the head as possible.With the spring to the head.

Yep, they're right. I put mine in the hose the right way, and then put the hose on upside down! Flipped it around so it was lined up properly and have been happily mowing and raking ever since.

Guys---both my 49 and 51 use this thermostat, and the POINTY END of this one goes TOWARDS the radiator and is installed close to the head.

I have not had any problems with overheating.

(quoted from post at 16:03:37 07/28/08) Simple solution, the thermo you have pictured is incorrect for an Ford "N" series.

Ramon;
Both the thermostats shown here, are in fact, the right thermostats for the "N" series Ford tractor. As a matter of fact the first one posted by the author of this post, is clearly marked on the box as being a FORD part.
Facts are facts!!!!

No.

The OEM 160* t-stat goes pointy end to the radiator, close to the block. This is a replacement 180* t-stat. The pointy end goes toward the block, opposite of the OEM 160* t-stat. It will work just fine; I've got these in all three of my N's. Install it close to the block.

Missouri;
That is the same thermostat and heat range I use in my 2N.
Don't worry the only thing you have to do is turn the top hose over and re-install. You just have your thermostat in up-side-down. Turn it around and you will be fine.
