Did some brush hoggin today, finished, parked tractor to allow cooling before putting to bed. Went to start her up and all i got was the super slow cranking of the engine, battery is good. I opened up the hood door, and tried cranking again. Then i noticed a spark coming from the bottom side of where the solenoid bolts to the starter. Removed all nuts and washers, sanded all surfaces till shiny, replaced same, still sparking. BTW this is a franken "n" with a front mount dizzy. Thanks to all you out there in "n" land in advance. You guys are great!

My 52 8n did the same thing .There was bad connection between the starter and the block .I loosened the starter and sanded both surfaces. now its the easyiest starting thing on the place.

Working dog, I think I'm gonna try replacing the solenoid first, not too much money and an easy fix, if that don't work, then I'll try your suggestion. Thanks for your input though.

I don't think your starter's bad, just the solenoid if its arcing like that.

You can jump the starter to make sure it spins if you want to be sure.

I guess I was reading solenoid and thinking starter, my bad! Solenoid sounds a whole lot better than starter, $ee what I mean?

For the starter or solenoid? As I understand it, it is the starter that is bad.

Thanks DinWa

JMOR's post made me go back and re-read what you said.

Is it sparking from the mount to the starter or from one of the posts?

He is correct in that it shouldn't need the mount grounded, so there

should be no reason for it to spark at the mount.

Half inch socket wrench?

It is sparking from the starter to the bracket. Yeah, a half inch drive socket wrench,(it was handy).

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeIf you are talking about a Ford 8N, then the solenoid case is isolated from everything......requires no case ground....works wired up hanging in free space. So if case is hot & makes a spark to chassis/engine iron, then it has internal short. No good. Replace.

From your description I'm guessing your franken N has an early 8N starter set up because it has a front dizzy and a solenoid.

Sounds like you were on the right track.

If it sparks at the connection, its a bad connection.

Can you tighten the bolts/screws up any?

Hi Royse, I was just admiring your cats' retrieval! Not Bad! Anyway, yes I did tighten up all nuts as much as I felt safe using a 1/2 in socket wrench.
