My old batt was dead on my + ground NAA, so I put in a new one. When I turned the key to start "er, she turned over strong and started quicker than she has in years... WOOHOO!

Anyway, now a couple days later, I began to think about how I put that new battery in. How the + ground cable clamp seemed too loose and how the neg clamp seemed too tight. So, I just went and checked. I"ll be darned, I put the new battery in backwards.... I have neg ground. DOH! I can"t believe I did that!

The thing is.... The tractor starts fine (at least it did the last time I tried to start it, a couple days ago)... never started better, infact.

My questions... I assume I should switch the batt cables and have + ground, the way it"s allways been? Could I have fried something, and if so what?

Thanks for he help!

Muskie

Thanks all for the info. I figure I'll change it back to the way it was... positive ground. I'll have to read up "polarizing the gen' as I've never done that.

I can't believe I did that bone-headed move of putting it in butt backwards! I'm just glad the mistake didn't cost me.

This forum is my 'go to' place when I have issues with my NAA. It's always been a great help!

Thanks,

Muskie

Some years ago I replaced the generator on my 9N with one from an old Ford truck. It turned out it was polarized negative ground. I never noticed that the ammeter was showing negative. Run it for several hours. By that time the generator had discharged and recharged the battery the other way. Run it like that for years without a problem. Made the correction next time I changed battery.

Your tractor just started better because of the new battery,I would change it back to the proper ground, polarize it and forget about it.

since your ammeter is likely reading backwards.. swap it back to pground.. repolarize and go..

You can leave it 'as is', but, you will need to 'polarize the generator'. If you switch it back, you will still need to 'polarize'. Be lucky for you if the regulator still works. Luck!

Generators are much more tolerant of polarity mistakes. If it were mine (IIWM) I'd re install the battery the correct way and maybe polarize the generator. Might leave my self a note on the battery that this is POSITIVE GROUND as a gentle reminder in case I have to jump it or use it to jump something else.
