My neighbor is a good neighbor, just not much good with tools. He ask me to look at his 300 Red Devil(his words) and tell him why it would only run for a few minutes. What I saw was a lot of new parts. He started it up and it ran for 3 or 4 minutes, started sounding bad then he stalled it. What I found first was resister as hot as a 2 dallor pistal and oil running out of coil. It has 12 volt convertion and I can't be sure what all has been done to the old Farmall. The points and condencer have been changed and wirers and cap and rotor and I don't know in what order. Should I start with the coil or should I look at something else also. I'm sure it could be a faulty new coil but they were changing everything in sight so it's not going to be easy to figure out where the problem started. This tractor is used only a few times a year and they go through this every time. I know a new coil is needed but then what should I check before melting another coil and everything electric?

There is no NAPA IC8 coil. IC7 is a true 6V coil though.

Thanks for your input but I didn't say 6v. I said 12v convertion. Thanks

Ok! Just for the record, what coil would you use with a resister?

i wouldn't use a 6v coil and resistor combo.. i'd use no resistor and a 12v coil.......

but 'for the record' a napa IC8 is a 6v coil...

newer coils are oil potted.

evidentally that coil got hot and popped the sea and is venting. that's not good.

it may still operate for a while untill it really cookes.. but it is not optimal right now.

it's possible that the coil and resistor are not of sufficient value for the primary and it got too hot... or could have been a defective coil.

not uncommon to see the resistor hot.

me? it's get rid of the resistor and use a real 12v coil like a napa ic14sb and go.

Soundguy, NAPA sold him a part#905 and said it works with or with-out a resister. I'm going to keep the # you gave me. It started to run better but not quite right. I adjusted the carb and that didn't help. And then.......I looked at the choke. It didn't look like it was full open. The cable has been broke for years he said. I took a screw driver pushed it open. The exhaust cleared up and it sounded better. Now I tried adjusting the carb again. Did it 3 times. The way you guys keep writing about. IT WORKED!!!!!!
Thanks to you and everyone else who are contributing to my education.

Oil filled coils can explode when over heated.YOU DONT WANT TO BE THERE WHEN IT GOES OFF.

that with or without a resistor is a dice game.

if it is a 6v coil on 6v.. it needs no resistor. if it is a 6v coil on 12v, it needs a resistor. if it's a 12v coil on 12v, no resistor, and 12v coil on 6v may not even work.. or if it does work.. works badly.

can't have your cake and eat it too. no magic coil works on both 6v and 12v, with or without a resistor. :)
