I have 43 2N with a rough run situation. It's a M/S TSX. It won"t run under 1/2 throttle unchoked. It runs better with 1/2 choke all the way to low idle which I guess to be about 400 RPMs. After checking for fuel flow at all the points this board has suggested. I found good flow at tank and carb however only a trickle out of float bowl. I tore it apart to replace needle valve and used carb cleaner to clean out all passages. I found float was 3/8" instead of 1/4" thus ajusted it. Also noticed inside of unit has a divite(sp?)on gasket mating surfaces made during manufactering being too much to sand out. I ajusted power needle to 1 1/2 turns and idle needle to 3/4 turn to start. Started right up and continued running rough unless 1/2 choked then runs smooth from low to high RPMs. Prior to tear down had power valve ajusted to 3 1/2 turns and idle valve @ 1 turn to make it run better but wasn"t smooth. I have to replace the manifold since it has a broken exhuast pipe mounting flange that blows exhaust onto carb any ways and am hoping intake gasket is leaking. The air filter is missing but clamped metal screening over carb till can get the right filter. Just wondering if I should just order another carb when I order the manifold or if the right filter would put the correct amount of air into carb. I get tired of waiting a week for parts to arrive. If filter is right way to go any suggestions on where to locate it? Thank You for any info you share with me on this matter.Norm |

If you can adjust the idle screw all the way in, full rich, with no change in running, then I would say you have a vacum leak sucking in air. In for rich out for lean.
the air cleaner does not restrict air flow enough to enrichen mixtrue to the extent that you need unlesss the filter is plugged. You can find the orginial air filters on EBAY.
You could have a plugged passage that just blowing carb cleaner thru did not clear up. I like to run a wire thru all of the passage ways.
AAlso don't forget to recheck the points like NOXJOHN suggested. |

| | Floatbowl flow about 1 min 20 secs for a pint. Carb cleaner spray test indicates no leaks around intake manifold or throttle shaft. Reajusted idle mixture screw to full rich but returned it to 1/2 out as no change in running. Could the original air filter restrict air flow enough to richen up mixture? I only have a screen over end of carb to keep larger stuff out of it. |

| i wouldnt order a new carb either, i did, and now im back to my original, the performance of the new carb was poor, almost wrecked the tractor, it sounds like that missing bolt is causing a air leak once the rpm, [ and vacuum] picks up, id fix that, then see what you have also get some kind of a air filter on the engine, or it will be overhaul time before you know it |

| Also check the points, rotor, condenser, cap and plugs. A richer fuel mixture can make a poor spark condition run better. |

| Norm....I definitely would not order another carb. I have a very hard time believing that yours is beyond repair. You say you have good fuel flow from the tank and to the carb, but "only a trickle from the bowl". I would first suggest removing the brass elbow from the carb and cleaning the screen that should be attached to it. Make sure it is not wadded up inside the housing.
You should be able to get about a pint a minute from the drain at the bowl. If only a trickle, tap lightly on the bowl with a screwdriver or hammer HANDLE. New carb = $125ish, full rebuild kit only cost ya 50 bucks. |

| The screen in the elbow was missing when I rebuilt it. I plan on replacing it soon though. I estimate flow was about that much after rebuild but will measure & time it in the morning. |

| | If the elbow screen is missing, dirt or rust could be plugging the carb. Do your test and if you don't get full flow at the drain you should check the float valve and also the passage from the elbow to the float valve. If you find restricted flow, don't expect to fix the problem without the new elbow screen installed. |
