Sounds like you have a couple problems and a lack of knowledge. The points need to be set at 0.025 and the cylinders are numbered #1 up by the radiator and #4 back by the steering wheel. Only guessing on this but sounds like you think #1 is by the steering wheel and the #4 by the radiator which is back wards

If you pulled the distributer out are you sure you didn't replace it 180° out?
You need to make sure it is on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke.

6v or 12v?

" i checked and points "

What does that mean? Was the gap .025 w/o any pits or burning?

" the firing order is goofy"

No, not really.

You're doing something wrong.

The firing order is indeed 1-2-4-3, CCW.

Had the distributor out lately? Messed w/ the timing?

Points gap is .025 on a sidemount. If you had the sidemount distributor out, you have messed with the timing. As Bruce sez, firing order is 1-2-4-3, so timing is obviously not right.

" 12v I have the points gapped to .15 and look brand new the distributer was out and placed back in haven"t messed with the timing "

Why did you remove the distributor?

That and the wrong gap is your problem.

Gap is .025 on a sidemount.

When you remove the distributor & put it back wrong, you change the timing.

Remove the #1 spark plug. Ignition off, place your thumb over the #1 spark plug hole and crank slowly until compression is felt. Continue to crank the engine until you see the timing mark, 0* (top dead center) on the flywheel through the timing hole in the right side of the bell housing. Use chalk on the flywheel to exactly align the 4 degree mark with the pointer. Set the point gap correctly! .025 on the high lobe of the cam. Insert the distributor. With the gears fully meshed, the rotor should point to the right front cylinder head bolt. If not, remove it & try again until the proper rotor position is obtained. Rotate the distributor housing counter clockwise until the points are closed. Put the cap on & double check the plug wires, 1-2-4-3, CCW. Then, remove the primary wire from the side of the distributor (or at the coil, whichever is easier) Put one lead of your VOM (set on resistance) on the stud on the side of the distributor & the other on the block or other good ground. Slowly turn the distributor. The needle will move as the points close & then open. Find the exact spot just as the points open & then tighten down the distributor.

Once the engine starts & gets to operating temp, and the idle is below 500 rpms, you can put your light on it to check the dynamic timing.
