I posted this message on the newer Ford tractor forum, but as the NAA and 8N have basically the same rear axle I am posting here as well.

I just installed new brakes, left axle and hub on my NAA. When adjusting the brakes with the left wheel off the ground, the right on the ground and the transmission in neutral, I expected to be able to freely turn the left wheel. However, after a 1/4 to 1/2 turn the wheel stops and acts like it wants to turn the right wheel. When I jack up the right wheel as well, then after the partial rotation both wheels turn together in the same direction. Is this right or is something busted in the differential? There is no grinding or clunking when both wheels turn.

With both wheels off the ground and in gear, the wheels turn in opposite directions as expected.

Here is the latest. This morning I jacked up both wheels put it in gear and turned the right wheel. Initially it jammed after a partial rotation, but a couple of gentle jogs got past that and it turned freely with both wheels rotating in opposite directions. Now, in neutral both wheels turn freely without obstructions.

What now? Do I assume everything is ok, or tear into it to look into the diffy? If time and effort were no object I would take it apart. Any votes on which way to go?

Hopefully it's just the brake shoes catching, but hard to tell from here.

Does it stop after 1/2 turn with the shoes removed?

Ditto. Sounds like a shim or tree.

Check out John Smith's site on doing the rear axle seals.

He lays it out pretty well.

I did look at Smith"s site and thought I had shimmed the axle properly. I replaced the two original metal shims and had to add a paper shim to get free play of .010 inch (measured with dial gauge). I did not rotate the axle at this point to check that I had the clearance at all positions.

Is it possible that something is caught between the two axle ends? I am afraid that something has come apart in the differential, as it stops abruptly when the approximately 1/2 turn of free play is used up.

Looks like I will be taking things apart.

Do the axles both turn together all the time or just after the half turn of free play? If it has a half turn of free play before the axles turn together I would be concerned about a problem in the differential assembly. You might want to pull the left axle trumpet so you can pull the differential out and inspect it.

They only turn together after the free play. I think you are right that something is messed up in the differential. I am trying to get my head around the need to get into the diffy.

When you replaced the axle you must not have shimmed the axle bearing retainer to set the proper preload on the axle bearings and the axles are too tight where they come together inside the differential.

nkcarizona........you complain BOTH axle turn the same direction. That means they are touching inside the diffy. You need a "shim" between yer axle trumpet mouth and yer axle bearing. You can no longer gitt metal shims but the cardboard shim works just as good. ........Dell
