I just hooked up my 3pt dirt scoop (facing forward) to my 9n, and I"m having some trouble moving manure. I adjusted the toplink so that it scoops the manure fairly well, but when I pick the scoop up the manure mostly falls out since the 3pt causes it to tip forward.

Is there some 3pt trick that I"m missing? I could just use it backwards, but the reverse gearing is fairly fast and I"d rather not push with the 3pt.

Thanks!

like others have said, all dirt scoops aren't equal

with their geometry.

Ford/Arps/Dearborn ones seem to work much better

than the new copies.

Light work like manure and piles of material, I use them in reverse

with sway bars on to help with the strain/impact.

And don't 'ram' too hard.

Digging dirt, or packed material, you're right,

tractor pulling forward is how tractors were designed.

I have a Ford scoop at the moment and am cleaning the muck

out of my water hole (good summer for it, not too much water to drag out with the blade)

scoop forward, full up on a 8N and it stays pretty level.

Now if I could just figure out how to keep the front end on the ground when I drive up and out :)

edit BTW started the job with a big $ modern small loader tractor-30hp-4wd.

HA! loader wouldn't hardly scratch my hard packed clay. switched to the

old Ford and its $100 scoop and getting it done...

I'll use the loader to move the dirt the 8N hauls up.

ya, I know a loader isn't designed for digging, but it's still surprising

how well that old Ford does compared to the new one.

these are good replies, I would like to know why you put it on facing forward. That means you are driving into the manure to scoop it. My wifeee wouldn't let me put may 8N back in the garage if I did that....

Fortunately we don"t have a garage to get dirty. I like to have it front-facing so it is easier on the 3pt. The horses also tend to spread/trample the pile, so it isn"t hard to get over.

"It seems like the problem is that the 3pt tilts the implement as it picks it up due to the position of the toplink " excatly, try adjusting the top link with it empty. When I raise my scoop it tilts back - full or empty.

You might try adding two "telescoping links" at the scoop/top link, as pictured on this Wood RM-59 mower. They alow the impliment to drop level to the ground and remain level as the impliment is raised, by shortening the overall length when dropped and lengthening when raised. They are part number 24091 on Messick's site or could easily be fabricated.

I have moved gravel by reversing the scoop and going back into the pile. (Also a KK scoop)

My experience is that there is a fine line on adjusting the top link to where it will pick up the material going forward, yet not dump when you pick it up. Just a very slight tilt downward works for me, but it usually takes a bit to get the angle just right.

My scoop is a King Kutter, and I am sure different scoops work slightly different. I usually start level, then keep adjusting until it just starts to dig when going forward.

Thanks, mine is a KK as well. Maybe I'll try working more to get the tilt right.

I have found some scoops just don't work. Others work good.

It seems like the problem is that the 3pt tilts the implement as it picks it up due to the position of the toplink and arms.
