Freshly rebuilt engine, 1941 9N, has voltage to the new coil, hot battery, no spark at the plugs. The distributor has new bushings and shaft, new points set at .015 and the condenser tests good. I used the meter to check continuity thru the distributor, no grounds. Its 12V and I am using the resistor. Whats left? |

Your line of thinking led me straight to the problem. Thank you Royse!
I was sure the coil spring was contacting the brass screw but what about the other contact on the coil? It was straight and measured 7/8" from the edge but the matching contact on the distributor cap is about 3/8 or 1/2" from the edge so I bent the contact strip on the coil into a U shape and checked for spark. Got a big fat spark and the engine fired up and ran good!!
I was about ready to scream yesterday, (The 100 degree temperature out there made things worse)
I appreciate this forum and everyone who is willing to offer help. Thanks guys! |

| The meter from where to the points shows continuity? If you're going from the top of the coil to the points, that would also include the spring. It just makes contact with the brass screw when you clamp the coil on top of the distributor, and some times does not make a good connection.
If you can turn the motor over while measuring continuity from ground to the top of the coil, key off of course, that measurement should fluctuate too. No continuity when the points are open, just a few ohms of resistance when they are closed. |

| Thanks Royse. What about the spring at the bottom of the coil?
The meter says the brass strip has continuity to the points so what else can I check there?

| What is the voltage to the coil? Should be 12 volts with the points open, and drop when the points close.
If the voltage doesn't drop when they close they may not be making contact. Could be shipping oil on the new points that needs to be cleaned off.
Could also be the little spring that connects the coil to the brass screw or a couple of other things like the brass strip that connects them.
Nice looking work by the way! |
