My peas got hit by the heat. I have several buckets of peas that are too tough to eat, figure they will make dry peas.

So far, the vines are giving up the pods ok. Not sure how to get the peas out of the pods. Would prefer the easy way, of course.

Not even sure that Enlish peas, Little Marvel IIRC, make good dry peas?

what i always did,was to simply let them dry in the pod.them you could get the peas out real easy. i kept them mostly for seed though, and i would simply put them in a jar in the fridge.i dont know why but i never liked the taste of them after they had been dried myself.

Thanks Jack, I have a feeling you are right about the taste. I planted too many peas, don't need that much seed. I'll keep at it for a while yet.

I've never tried to pick/shell/store English peas, but in a moment of youthful exuberance & ignorance, I did try drying Navy beans & black eyed peas.

Go to the grocery store. Check the price for a 1 lb bag of dried peas or beans. About $2 a lb. I think. Compare that to what it will take in time to dry your own.

I'll bet English peas dry like black-eyed peas, so here is how to do that:

Leave them on the vine 2 -3 weeks longer than normal; sometimes even a month.

Do not pick the peas on a humid day or after a rain.

When the peas rattle in the shell, they are ready.

Shell them.

Lay out all the shelled peas to dry. I did this outside, under roofing paper, for 2-3 days.

Store them in a cool, dry place.

Thanks Bruce, I will do as you say. In the mean time I will shell the ones I picked. We have had strange weather in the big alligator (Spokane). Heavy rain yesterday. Not good for drying. Great for the other stuff.
