My friend Melvin and I have been rebuilding my '47 2N. We have been working on it in our spare time about a year now. Finally got to the point we thought we could start the tractor.
Overhauled the engine, new bearings, new valves, keepers, guides, pistons, etc.
Started engine let it run 5 to 10 seconds, no oil pressure. Hmmmm. Remembered reading previous post about priming oil pump. Followed instructions and primed oil pump.
Started engine again and let it run about 10 seconds still no oil pressure!!!
Hmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!
Afraid to make any more attempts to start without finding out what the problem is. We disconnected the oil pressure gage line and applied air pressure to the oil gage. It works. Applied air pressure to the "T" on the back of the block (where the lines go to the filter and oil pressure gage) applying pressure backwards through the engine to the oil pump. We could hear air bubbling up and it sounded like it was going back through the oil pick-up into the oil pan. Sounds bad to me!! I am thinking the oil pump should stop the air flow and build up pressure. Doesn't happen. Only thing I can think of is there must be a gear (gears) left out of the oil pump. As old as we are and as long ago as it was when the pump was installed maybe we just think we installed the gears?
Anyway unless some of you can think of something else I guess we will be pulling the pan and checking out the pump.

Is this a new pump? Did you pack it with lube plate? Gasket if you checked gears in it. If its the old pump are you sure it was working? 80/90 Valvoline shot in through oil bypass should do it.You may have to drop the pan and check the pump. Lot of things to check. Ya did put oil in it,right? Just checking.

It is the old pump. When I turned the gear in solvent it would pump solvent and appeared to me to work ok. I did use the 80-90 gear oil to prime. And there is oil in it.
I am going to try some of the suggestions offered. I am afraid you may be right I will have to drop the pan. Just trying to make sure I am not overlooking something.

Yea you guys did a real nice job on this 2N looks real nice. Im about done with a 46, The last 8N I buffed up 3yrs ago The oil pump lost its prime due to the drive gear bushing was worn. It would prime fine and pump till the next start up. I just replaced pickup tube and the pump as I had it sold. With 2 people it will not be to much trouble if its the pump.

Did you remove and forget to replace the galley plugs?

Hate to show my ignorance, but, I didn't realize it had any oil galley plugs. I DID have the block vatted and I guess it is possible that they were removed. I didn't even think to check for something like that.

Normal to remove them and clean that part of the block. Ask the machinist who did the cleaning.

With the engine torn down it is real easy to hit the oil pickup tube and break the seal at the pump. This is the problem about half the time. Try using air in the oil filler spout and seal with a rag or somethine and see if you get an oil seapage at the gauge. Remove the line at the gauge or block. Running the engine heats up real fast and can hurt the engine with no oil pressure. Try pulling the tractor with plugs out. Want get hot and gets the same result.

If I pressurize the block through the oil filler spout and the seal is broken then I would not get oil at the oil pressure gage? but if the seal is not broken then I should get oil at the gage? Would the oil pump gears (assuming they are actually in the pump) prevent oil from from going through?

Did you look in your box of spare parts to see if the gears were in there?

Make sure that the oil pump pressure spring and pin are installedin the timing cover. It's located behind a 15/16 or may be a 7/8 inch plug in the top of the timinging cover right above the distributor. Another possibility is that the pickup tube on your pump is cracked allowing it to suck air and not pick up the oil. You can overfill the crankcase to see if that is the problem. Hope this helps.

Yes, the pin and spring are there.
Overfilling sounds like a great idea. I would think that would also check for a bad seal between the pickup tube and the oil pump??

Try priming the pump again with 90 wt gear oil. Then jump the starter with a 12 volt battery and look for oil pressure. Make sure tractor is out of gear, switch off. +- does not make a difference. Ground one jumper lead to a bare metal and touch other lead to front post on battery. Tractor motor will spin as soon as lead hits post.

When I primed it I used Valvoline 80W-90 gear oil. Wouldn't that be heavy enough??
