46 2N-frontmount dizzy- I did a 12v conversion using JMOR s diagram keeping 6v coil & adding 2nd resistor. I missed the part abouting add the "diode or idiot lamp" & could not shut off tractor unless I unplugged the excite wire. Is this because the "diode or idiot lamp" that is not installed? I found that if I moved the excite wire to the bottom/middle post on the original dash mounted resistor it worked right. Is it ok to use it like this? If not where do I get the diode or idiot lamp & what is a "idiot lamp" |

| | Tom........you ask........"what is a "idiot lamp".......what do you think an idiot lite is??? Ittz fer DPO (idiots) that can't read the amp gauge. It is also cheaper so Detroit likes to use idiot lights 'stedda' expensive gauges. Simple, eh? The idiot lite is used in the switched "excite" line from the simple 2-terminal ignition switch. Without the idiot lite, you can NOT turn yer engine OFF (as you found out) as it sneaks volts back to the ignition coil. The bottom middle post of the original 3-terminal "infamous ballast resistor" is always HOT, so I'm not certain why you claim you could turn yer engine OFF??? You can buy "idiot-lites" at yer local autoparts store. Except they call'um trailer clearance lites. Just install between ignition switch ON terminal and alternator EXCITE terminal. And yer Delco 10-SI alternator will work just like God and General Motors (Delco) intended. Simple, eh? .........Dell, a 12V advocate for the right reasons; who knows 8-ways to convert to 12V and they all work right the first time |

You will not need a diode if you use a light , which you probably have something you can rig up to test it out . Save your light contraption as they are handy testing coil and starter switch problems . |

| Thanks Ken- I ll get a diode & a light.tomorrow. I understand now that the diode will allow me to shut it off with it wired properly. It was a cheap conversion, friend gave me the alt, found a ballast resistor in the shop & made the brackets. So I guess few bucks for a diode ain t bad. Thanks for your help . |

| The idiot light is supplied with voltage from your ignition switch (+) .
When the alternator is not turning the alternator terminal voltage is zero or ground (-) and the light come on .
When the alternator kicks in the terminal becomes energized (+) at about the same voltage as the battery (+) so there is no current flowing , thus no light .
If your battery is extremely low (-) and the voltage is less than the alternator output (+) the light may glow very dim .
A diode will only let current flow in one direction , if installed correctly , to the alternator terminal . Once the key switch is turned off the diode will keep from back feeding the coil .
I prefer the idiot light and no amp gauge . I use that hole for a temp gauge . About any small 12v automotive bulb will work . I picked up a small 12v lamp and red holder assembly that fits in a 1/2" hole at radio shack for a few bucks .
If I leave the ignition switch on the red light reminds me to turn off the ignition before it melts something .

| | "I prefer the idiot light and no amp gauge " Gotta say I agree. On the later tractors they only have idiot lights for oil pressure and charging. A big red light on the dash is more apt to get my attention than a gauge. |
