What Makes A Grown Man....

Got to wondering about something. The last time I did a couple hours of brush hogging on my 8N when I finally parked it, I gave her a "good ol girl" pat on the hood. I actually said the words.

I have three cars and I don't do that with any of them. They are just a "PITA" like having to take the van in for a smog test tomorrow.

So what is it about these old machines that makes a grown man do something like that?

(quoted from post at 16:48:44 05/24/12) maybee since it's a 60something yr old machine that still earns it's keep..?

Yep, thought about that too. I was only three years old when my 8N was born.

Also, could be that the idea is to acknowledge the fact that some guys just seem to want to love their "Old Gal".....but would not do that with a guys name on their "N"!!!!

Now me and "Hermie the 2N" have a dif. relationship....He is there for me to work, and always is up to the task at hand.

AND, Having been married to the same woman for over 52 yrs......ONE woman to love in my life............; IS ENOUGH!!!!!!

Look at it this way....there will probably be nothing from this era around in 25 years..and that 8N will probably Still be running..!

Just weird......just plain weird!

If you brought that machine back from the dead, or built it up from what it was when you got it, or you have kept it running for years and years, maybe it's just a pat on the back for youself.
You're patting her for repaying your efforts.
Or maybe you're just in love with tractors.

I guess it could also be the time in man hours that tractor has saved me. I remember living the first 25 years in this same place and doing dirt road duty with a shovel and a garden cart. Some of the washouts after the storms were so big that when I'd throw that first shovel full of dirt in them it would just disappear. That can be very disheartening. I actually had to have 50 feet of 24" culvert pipe put in in one section of road. I live in the hills and of course all the water gathers and runs down and across my roads.

Yessir, that tractor has saved me from more back breaking labor than I like to even imagine. Throw in the brush hog and the FEL and it's a pure Godsend.

By the way thanks asken, your post brought a real smile to my face. Heck now I want to go hug all my girls.

No doubt about it. I do have feelings for my tractors. Mostly good, occasionally bad.
My 52 8N was my dad's first tractor and is the same age I am. It cranks better than I do. I hope it is still going strong long after I am gone.

you get attached to them, the old ford tractor is proof that one doesnt need all the fancy trouble prone electronics of modern stuff, the N tractor is simple, it just runs and does its job up to the limit of its horsepower, its reliable if given a little care and mantenence and a drink of fresh oil once in awhile most of all its relaxing after a day of high stress and nothing going right to fire up such a simple machine and go brush hogging or whatever and just listen to it pull as the sun sets, heck in my case i just turn on the lites and keep on mowing sometimes as late as 1 or 2 am, lol try that in the city

Just finished planting the rest of my fruit trees. Gave the 8N a nice pat and thanked it for all the hard work these past few weeks. Getting gardens ready etc. Put in quite a few hours. Good on fuel also. The Allis WD is also nice but some times too big for the job.
61 years old and runs like a top. Try that with your 2012 car!

Yep do that all the time ... not just with my N
but with my motorcycles and pick up as well.

Just an aside - our town was hit by a tornado a
month or so ago and my parents property sustained
some damage, mostly a lot of trees downed and
debris (lucky the house and barn suffered only
some minor damage - there was a lot more damage to
other's property).

Took my son's 9N over and worked the old girl
hard, pulling stumps, dragging debris, righting
trees that could be saved. She just kept at it
for days, snorting away without a complaint. She
got a lot of pats in those weeks and further
convinced me that I will never be without one.

I have idea, but I certainly get attached to both my working tractor and my car (which doubles as my farm truck). I talk to both on a regular basis :)

good reason to buy USA products;; if they talk back, you can understand what they are saying!

Maybe just maybe they got it right?
I had a John Deere B for years and didn't like it
nearly as much as my 8n.

John Deere B
Rocker arms suck, climbing on and off was like
climbing three stories on a ladder...
hand clutch...tricycle....

My 8n has been getting its butt worked off since
March, cleared 14 trees and back filled the stump
holes. Plowed the food plots, disc'ed and harrow
plowed them to level them....
and in her spare time....she mows the lawn with a
woods finish mower....

All I did with my B was drag a harrow plow around
by a chain.

Yep every time I get off it at the end of the day
I smile and say man, that's a nice tractor.
