I just did my 51 8N last week using Hobo's instructions. Did it with head on engine. Instructions to use penny to center hole is accurate.

Drained about a coffe can of coolant from side of block before drilling.

I used thread cutting oil on the bit. It lubes but also helps collect the filings. Remove, clean, and relube bit several times

I ended with 9/16 bit, not 37/64 for 3/8 NPT tap. It worked ok.

I also used a pocket extension magnet to remove filings as I threaded the hole. Cut a little bit, remove, clean and relube tap several times. cleaned with magnet each time I removed tap. When finished I added antifreeze and allowed it to run out and flush hole before installing gauge.

This is a tapered tap. Don't go too deep.

There is approximately 3 inches of free space behind the hole in the head.

Thanks to Gary and RVirgil_KS for putting these instructions and pics together. I elected to install my sending unit in the upper radiator hose and I'm sure now that it would have been much easier and simpler just to drill and tap the boss in the head.

FYI this mod also works on 9-2N heads. You just have to be a little careful as there"s no boss. But it worked fine on mine. Its an 8N with a 2N head(long story).

I choose to install the sensor via the upper radiator hose. Clean install without modifying the originality. Found I positioned the T-adaptor a bit low on the hose. When installing the hood, the front of the gas tank is right up to the adaptor. Should have moved the T up the hose about an inch..

I did that ( just not as pretty ) with a piece of 1-1/2" exhaust pipe and half of a pipe coupler .

I installed the t stat first , close to the head , and the temp probe after the t stat . Don't guess theres a right or wrong but it is kinda neat to watch the gauge swing when the t stat opens and closes .
