My starterhas been working fine for the last 3 weeks intell today. I ran it good in the morning then after a few hours i came back start it up and it made a loud grinding sounds. I took the starter off and found that every tooth had been broke and ground till it was round. i riged up a new starter and it runs now.
How does this happend, could it just be old or is there something wrong?

if you are lucky the ring gear on the flywheel is intact--the teeth on the bendix do go bad after a while-or the spring on the bendix gets weak-as long as it isn't grinding now you should be good to go. if the grinding starts again you may have to split the tractor and replace the ring gear. just keep your fingers crossed

It maybe that 12 volts put to much torque or spins the starter to quickly for some bendix. I suspect that some of the new bendix are not made from the best of metals. I converted a 1949 front mount to 12 volts and retained the old 6 volt starter but installed a new type bendix. It worked great for about 6-8 months and then you would hear a grind sometimes when you hit the starter. It sounded like the bendix was not meshing properly with the flywheel teeth. I replaced the bendix with another new style and it has worked great for about a year now. My 1950 side mount has been 12 volts with a 6 volt starter for 3 years and no problem. I use it more then the 1949 8N. It may depend on where the bendix was made.

I took the advice of several people on this site and replaced 6v starter with a 12v one just to be safe. the p.o converted to 12v over 35 yrs ago, when I pulled the starter I noticed the pin was gone and the bendix was welded to the shaft so he obviously had problems.
